The South Glasgow University Hospitals NHS Trust, established in November 1998, became operational on 1 April 1999 and comprises the following:

  • The Southern General hospital
  • The Victoria Infirmary
  • Cowglen Hospital and Mansionhouse Unit
  • Mearnskirk House and the West of Scotland Mobility and Rehabilitation Centre (WESTMARC).

The Trust with a total bed complement of 1954 beds (including 222 partnership beds), employs some 5,550 staff delivering services to 59,500 inpatients, 18,800 day case patients and 84,500 new outpatients within a forecasted income of £161m.

The Southern General Hospital

The services provided by the Department of Medicine includes the sub-specialities of:

  • Cardiology
  • Rheumatology
  • Haematology
  • Diabetes
  • Chest Diseases
  • Gastro-Intestinal
  • Liver Diseases
  • Endocrinology

The General surgical services include a five-bedded Intensive Therapy Unit. The Urology, Ophthalmology and Dermatology Departments provide an in-patients service to the population of South Glasgow. ENT and Dental Outpatient Services are also provided on the Southern General Hospital Site. Institute of Neurological Sciences is based on the Southern General Site campus and provides Neurosurgical, Neurological, Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuroradiological facilities for the population of Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

The Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit for Scotland, provides acute and rehabilitation spinal injuries services to the whole of Scotland, replacing former facilities within Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Department of Podiatry (chiropody) is a purpose built 24-chair clinic, including minor procedures theatre.

Day Surgery is provided in a purpose-built twin operating theatre suite with full supporting accommodation including a five-bedded recovery area, a five-bay reception/patient preparation area and ten beds. Assessment and Rehabilitation Service for the Young Physically Disabled is provided from a purpose built 30-bed unit.

All the above services are supported by other consultant-based services, which incorporate diagnostic and clinical components including:

  • Anaesthetics
  • Laboratory Medicine
  • Neuronaesthetics
  • Neuropathology
  • Clinical Neurophysiology (including EEG, EMG and EP)
  • Neuroradiography and Radiology including new Spiral CT Scanner.

Also available is a range of therapeutic services, which include:

  • Audiology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Dietetics
  • Occupational Therapy
  • ECG
  • Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy
  • The Victoria Infirmary

    The services provided by the Department of Medicine includes the sub-specialities of:

    • Cardiology
    • Rheumatology
    • Haematology
    • Respiratory Medicine
    • Gastro-Enterology
    • Diabetes and Endocrinology

    The General Surgical Services includes an eight bed high Dependency Unit and the sub-specialities Vascular, Breast Cancer and Colorectal. The Urology, Ophthalmology and Dermatology in patient beds are provided at the Southern General Hospital. Day Surgery is provided by two theatres and twenty-four-recovery bays.

    There is also a wide range of therapeutic services.

    The Mansionhouse Unit & Mearnskirk House

    The Mansionhouse Unit accommodates 252 elderly patients. Mearnskirk house in Newton Mearns is a purpose built 72-bed facility providing continuing care for the elderly.
