Description
The number of emergency and urgent calls continues to increase year on year. Skilled technicians and paramedics attended over 120,000 emergency and a further 30,000 urgent calls in the last 12 months.

Providing and maintaining an effective response within the resources available has becvome a familier and challenging task. Making sure that the right level of ambulances and rapid response units are available at the right times and in the right places to meet the anticipated pattern of 999 calls is critical to the delivery of effective care. The Trust's overarching aim is to reach every patient in time to make a difference.

Staff in the emergency control room are responsible for despatching the nearest and most appropriate response vehicle and a dedicated 'tasking desk' monitors the availablity and location of vehicles, crews and managers who can all be utilised to respond to an emergency.

Although ambulances are based at various station throughout the county they are most often despatched from strategic cover points chosen because they are nearer to the likely location of 999 calls.

The Trust took a number of additional steps to maintain standards. Fifty two additional trainee paramedics were recruited during the year and electronic in-cab mapping installed in every front line vehicle to assist crews in reaching incidents by the quickest route.

In addition to the 8 minute response time target for life threatening conditions the Trust strives to meet other national targets for emergency and urgent calls. Although its operational response to 999 calls met all the required standards, response to requests from Doctors is an area for improvement.
