Luton Hospital is the hub for an OMFS network covering Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes & North & East Herts. This post is based at Luton Hospital with designated sessions at Lister. Though rare, there may on occasion be a requirement to work on other sites within the Network.

Weekly work commitments will be within EWTD guidance & also be influenced by the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial recommendations, the Consultant contract & will be specified in the Job Plan.

The appointee will participate in a 1:8 on call commitment based at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

The Clinical Director will encourage the member to be part of the New Consultant Forum of the British Association of Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons & will also help to choose a mentor within the Trust but outside the department.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be competent in assessing & carrying out the full range of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. All in-patient services & on-call duties have been centralised to Luton Hospital. Out-patient clinics, day case surgery & local anaesthetic minor oral surgery are undertaken in all of the units.

The OMFS department at Lister Hospital has a well-equipped Maxillofacial Laboratory staffed by three technicians & its own in house digital imaging facility.

OMFS has day surgery lists in both the Treatment Centre & the newly built Day Surgery unit. The clinical team is fully supported by a team of highly trained dental nurses & maxillofacial/orthodontic technologists.

We are fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and post graduate doctors and have an excellent reputation for junior staff training.

Both hospitals have easy access to central London & the rural Chilterns. Excellent schools are found nearby.  London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

Travel between hospital sites may be required. Residence is required within ten miles by road of the hospital.

Working for our organisation

Our Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton. Travel between hospital sites may be required.

The Trust continues to be committed to delivering the best patient care using the best clinical knowledge and technology available.

As part of our continued response to COVID19 the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 (“the 2014 Regulations”) was updated and approved by Parliament. This meant that full COVID19 vaccination would become a condition of employment in all NHS roles which have face-to-face contact with patients and service users from 1 April 2022 unless exempt.

As this role is within scope of the current legislation COVID19 vaccination status will remain part of our routine Occupational Health check.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and your patients from the virus. If you’re still unsure, you can find lots of information on COVID-19 vaccines and the booking process on the NHS Website.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointments will be subject to full Occupational Health Clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidates prior to commencement.

The appointee will have Full UK General  Medical and General Dental registration  at time of application.

These will be scheduled prior to the interview date; all shortlisted candidates must attend these appointments.
