Job overview

East Cheshire NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Cardiology.

The successful candidate will join within the Cardiology Department. The Consultants in Cardiology are based on the Cardiology ward (7) and the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with a total of 32 beds, including 4 single rooms and a negative pressure room.

The post holder will contribute to the management of all the patients in the Cardiology Ward and will contribute to an in-reach service to the MAU, other medical wards and non-medical wards.

It will be expected that the post holder will be heavily involved in the management of inpatients with at least twice weekly ward rounds and further visits to the ward during the week to facilitate discharges and help with management of acutely unwell patients.

The Trust are actively looking to implement CTCA onsite at East Cheshire Trust and this post will support the initiation of that programme of work.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will have an important role in the training of junior medical staff in the assessment and management of cardiology patients as well as contributing to MRCP PACES teaching and postgraduate medical training of foundation year doctors and speciality trainees. 

The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly and achieve high quality care with particular emphasis on:

Managing in-patients in the cardiology wards including supervising junior medical staff. 
Developing appropriate services to meet clinical needs within available resources.
Working together with colleagues in primary care and the community to ensure effective management of cardiology patients.
Participation in the education and training of medical students, doctors and professions allied to medicine including those in primary care.
Ensuring that optimal use is made of all resources allocated to the post.
Demonstration of a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance.
Developing and maintaining robust systems for effective clinical audit in the specialty, as appropriate.
Further developing services as indicated by recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians, NICE and specialist societies.

Working for our organisation

NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level.  For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint.  The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed year’s experience in terms of nature, type and level of role.  The evidence required to increase a starting salary would be Payslips and details noted in the application form i.e. complete employment history

Essential criteria
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR or European Community Rights
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full registration with General Medicine Council (GMC) with license to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced life support

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in Cardiology.
  • Broad range of recent experience in Cardiology
  • Expertise in relevant practical procedures e.g. insertion of pericardial drains (under u/s and Xray guidance), insertion of temporary pacing wires (under Xray guidance)
  • Evidence of ability to change clinical practice and service provision
  • Up to date practice in line with recent initiatives
