Are you a motivated, innovative and dynamic pharmacy technician, pharmacist or biomedical scientist with an interest in Quality Systems?  Placed within the pharmacy the successful candidate will work cross-site with the Pharmacy Quality and Projects Manager and act as a deputy, providing senior leadership, undertaking quality assurance functions relating to pharmacy Aseptic Preparation Services, MHRA Wholesale Dealers Authorisation, and Home Office controlled drugs licences. In addition, the role will include assisting with planning and services moves in pharmacy. The successful candidate can expect a supported induction period, training, and development opportunities.

In this role you will:

  • Provide senior leadership in the provision of pharmacy services, liaising with all contributors to the pharmacy quality system audit agenda including pharmacy board, lead pharmacists and their teams, pharmacy staff, nursing staff and other health professionals where appropriate.

  • Develop links nationally and regionally with other pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and quality staff to share best practice.
  • Assist with ensuring the pharmacy quality systems which protect the patients and external customers from errors are robust.
  • Assist in training of other staff with regards to quality and service development.

Service Delivery and Improvement

  • Assist with ensuring the requirements of Good Distribution Practice are complied with such that the Trust retains all statutory licenses it requires to support the services it provides to other healthcare providers inside and outside of the NHS.
  • Assist with planning and delivery of new facilities working closely with Pharmacy Quality and Projects Manager and leads for services.
  • Assist with the reporting of internal and external audits including self-inspection.
  • To participate in internal and external audits including self-inspection.
  • To contribute to the clinical governance process by reducing quality and medication errors through encouraging and accepting feedback from Datix system users and the pharmacy quality system users.
  • To implement or promote any outcomes in relation to internal or external audits.
  • To be aware of and work within departmental procedures and policies; accepted standards of practice, and relevant legislation (e.g. Health and Safety, Medicines Act) at all times to practice in accordance with the GPhC Standards of Conduct, Ethics and Performance.
  • To assist in the development and maintenance of clinical procedures and guidelines for good practice, both within the pharmacy and the Trust.
  • To act as deputy when required in Preparative Services Governance Board.
  • To carry out any other duties as requested by the Pharmacy Quality and Projects Manager e.g. information retrieval for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) /incident review, Deviations and Datix reports etc

Patient Care Delivery

  • Assist with ensuring the pharmacy quality systems which protect the patients and external customers from errors are robust.
  • Assist with ensuring all aspects of pharmacy service exceed any agreed national or trust ‘minimum standard’ and that where this is not the case it is identified with proposed actions to resolve the issue.
  • Assist with developing audit processes to ensure that all legal, professional and service requirements are met. Help to ensure the audit cycle is completed, especially where action points were identified.
  • Assist with implementing and monitoring national initiatives and directives where relevant to the role.
  • Ensure that user views are accounted for in the planning and implementation of service delivery.
  • Assist with ensuring that errors, complaints and incidents within the scope of the role are managed within the Trust’s guidelines

Communication

 To build and maintain excellent communication and working relationships with all members of the pharmacy team.

  • To work effectively and positively with Pharmacy Quality and Projects Manager in relation to delivering internal audit and self-inspections and action plans for both internal and external audits as needed.
  • Communicate technical information regarding audit and feedback.
  • To liaise with all contributors to the pharmacy quality system audit agenda including pharmacy board, lead pharmacists and their teams, pharmacy staff, nursing staff and other health professionals where appropriate.
  • To assist the Pharmacy Quality and Projects Manager in the dissemination of information required by the Chief pharmacist and where required within the Trust.
  • To develop links nationally and regionally with other pharmacy technicians, pharmacists and quality staff to share best practice.
  • To assist in providing updates to all members of the pharmacy board.
  • To communicate complex technical information to colleagues and service users both internally and externally.
  • Participate in relevant working groups communicating and feeding back to both with senior and junior colleagues.
  • Assist in training of other staff with regards to quality and service development.
  • To liaise with external auditors e.g. Specialist Pharmacy Services (SPS) and MHRA, communicating relevant information within timelines.

People Management and Development

  • Ensure that all staff adhere to departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
  • To provide specialist training to staff of all grades in the use of the pharmacy quality system and quality management system, including deviation and change control, risk assessment, root cause analysis, criticality and quality risk management.
  • Support and facilitate training programmes for pre-registration pharmacy technicians.
  • To participate in the training and development of trainee pharmacists supporting the education and training teams.
  • To act as an educational supervisor to members of staff who are undertaking NVQ 2 & 3 where necessary, supporting the education and training teams.
  • To lead and participate in the education and training of members of staff external to pharmacy, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists etc.
  • Successfully complete and maintain own accreditations, including MO, dispensing and checking if appropriate.
  • Undertake continuing professional development/revalidation to keep up to date with advances in service and own educational needs.
  • To conduct and attend educational sessions for all members of staff.
  • To work closely with the Pharmacy Quality and Projects Manager and Lead Education and Training Technician in all aspects of education and training relating to pharmacy Quality Systems. 

Staff Responsibilities

 To be responsible for direct line management and supervision to allocated staff including recruitment and selection.

  • To perform appraisal; 1-2-1 meetings, recruitment and retention; performance management; for staff the post holder line-manages - assess staff performance against agreed performance standards/objectives and/or competencies at least annually and develop meaningful and achievable personal development plans and objectives.

  • Registered with GPhC or relevant professional body
  • Experience of Quality Systems
  • Ability to training / coach other staff members
  • Master of Science degree in an appropriate scientific subject e.g. Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy or relevant Science degree / experience and training NVQ3 plus CPD, experience and training equivalent to MPharm level.
  • Practical knowledge of and commitment to principles of GDP, GMP, QA and GCP including current legislation and regulations
