Due to an ever-increasing demand for our services, Bromley Healthcare’s Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Service are continuing to expand our fantastic and supportive team. 

All work will be supported through regular planned, as well as ad-hoc, supervision and training with Specialist Band 6 and Highly Specialist Band 7 Speech and Language Therapists. 

We are keen to receive applications from experienced, enthusiastic, flexible and highly motivated Band 5 Speech & Language Therapists and Newly Qualified (or soon-to-be qualified) Speech and Language Therapists to join our friendly and supportive team. There are opportunities to work all year round or term-time only.

You will work with a mixed paediatric caseload who have a range of speech, language and communication needs. You will be responsible for the management, assessment and treatment of the children on these caseloads, with the support of peers and more senior colleagues. 

We have an excellent system of appraisal and clinical supervision for all staff. There are regular Band 5 seminars for internal training on a variety of clinical areas (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Language Disorder, Speech Disorders, Stammering, EHCP report writing, target setting), as well as the opportunity to apply for external training courses that interest you.

The post holder is responsible to safeguard children, young people and adults at risk.

 To provide a speech and language therapy service to patients with

 communication and/or swallowing disorders with appropriate support from a supervisor.

 To make a differential diagnosis based on evidence from assessment, leading to decisions about intervention/treatment, seeking advice as appropriate.

 To communicate complex condition-related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions.

 To maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of patients/clients and their careers in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of the patient/client’s difficulties and implications of the same.

 To initiate and provide a variety of treatment options according to patient's needs, including the use of interpreters as appropriate, with support from senior therapists.

 To negotiate and work closely with clients, carers, other professionals and families, agreeing decision-making and prioritisation relevant to the patient/client’s management, devising agreed care plans based on best practice, seeking advice as necessary.

 To use methods of alternative communication e.g. signing, symbols, speech synthesisers after training to maximise the client’s communication.

 To demonstrate empathy with clients, carers and families and colleagues, aiming to achieve effective communication, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.

  • Recognised speech & language therapy degree qualification or equivalent.

Professional Registration

  • Health Professions Council License to practice.
  • Registered member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.

Experience

  • Evidence of developing responsibility for clinic and caseload management.
  • Experience of working with other professionals relevant to client groups.

Specific Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including observation, listening and empathy.
  • Well developed analytical skills with use of knowledge necessary for case load management, assessment and therapy relevant to client group e.g. prioritisation
  • Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment diagnosis and treatment of clients/patients.
  • Ability to transcribe speech phonetically.
  • Skills in handling clients/ patients with disabilities.
  • Ability to maintain intense concentration in all aspects of patient management for prolonged periods.
  • Good analytical skills with use of knowledge necessary for case load management, assessment and therapy relevant to client group e.g. prioritisation.
