Audiologist

Band 5 - 37.5 hours - Permanent 

The post holder will be providing direct patient care to our Adult and Paediatric population. In doing so, you will implement programmes of care required to support and manage their hearing needs. It is crucial that the post holder works within their sphere of competence and knowledge in relation to Adult and Paediatric pathways. The post holder will work within a range of procedures and pathways in which they have experience to ensure a streamlined care plan is provided for  patients/carers and their families. The post holder will also support the other team members and students

  • Assisting in the day-to-day running of the Audiology Service to ensure ENT clinics, outreach clinics, adult hearing assessment and hearing aid clinics operate effectively with good clinical outcomes.
  • Responsibility of working autonomously in outreach clinics, transporting, setting up and using expensive equipment including technical problem solving alone.
  • Responsible for the completion of home visits for housebound patients in own home and/or nursing/care home setting
  • Working independently providing a diagnostic and rehabilitative service for adults, including those with physical and/or learning difficulties.
  • Responsibility for management of own patients, formulating and delivering care plans for adults.
  • Fitting of NHS Hearing Aids to adults including rehabilitation
  • Completion of school age (5yrs +) hearing assessment clinics
  • Use of drills, grinders and polishers for ear mould adjustment.
  • Frequent prolonged concentration required during clinical work.

Working closely with Audiology Service Manager/Lead Audiologist to maintain high standards of care for hearing impaired patients, adhering to trust and departmental procedures.

Ability to deal with difficult patient/staff situations which may occasionally include emotional, upsetting or distressing issues.

Prioritise own workload effectively.

To develop own role and remain current with professional standards.

Responsible for identifying, negotiating and achieving agreed CPD requirements.

Maintain professional development including up to date membership of BAA and membership of RCCP.

Ability to delegate tasks to other staff both technical and clerical as appropriate.

Supervision and training of less experienced staff including students.

 Training and supervision of students to graduate entry level.

Teaching and advising colleagues, trainees, students and other professional disciplines, aspects of Audiology within the organisation.

Teaching and advising patients, parents and carers.

Understand the needs and philosophies that underpin research – research ethics, evidence based healthcare

Assisting in the development of new professional techniques including clinical trials, R&D activity, equipment testing in line with departmental and Trust objectives

Participate in the evidence gathering for UKAS IQIPS accreditation process

Support junior staff in research methods and technologies.

Be responsible for the safe use of equipment of others and monitoring stock.

Ensure any faulty equipment identified by yourself or others is dealt with immediately and appropriately.

Any other duties as identified by the Audiology Service Manager

Excellent verbal communication skills with both patients and other professionals.

Ability to effectively communicate complex test results and technical information to both patients and other professionals with tact and persuasive skills as required.

Analysis and interpretation of information/test results/problems.

Maintaining Audiology statistics both electronically and manually.

Effective use of resources – IT systems, maintaining patient’s records both electronically and manually, data extraction, reports, requiring good concentration skills.

Report writing/referral to other professionals regarding patients test results, outcomes and future care plans.

The post holder have to manipulate tools which will require excellent dexterity

Physical efforts including: Sitting, Standing, walking and occasional maneuvering of patients from wheelchair to seat or sitting to standing (and vice versa)

Mental effort: There will be a requirement to produce reports/response letters that will take high levels of concentration and appropriate time management

Emotional effort: The post holder may be exposure to distressing/emotional situations, counselling patients (inc family/carers) in relation to hearing loss.  The post holder may encounter some patients with co-morbidities and/or mental health issues. Excellent communication skills and empathy will be essential

Working conditions: The post holder will work within the Audiology Dept at Tameside General Hospital and at community outreach clinics. The post holder may be exposed to wax & occasional ear discharge when completing otoscopy

Qualifications

  • BSc in Audiology or the equivalent professional qualification (ONC/HNC BTEC in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurements with a Professional Qualification in Audiology (BAAT Part I and II).
  • AHCS & BAA Registration
  • Must be willing to participate in any relevant training identified to develop skills required to carry out duties

Knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of general responsibilities related to patient information and record keeping
  • Clinical experience in assessment, treatment and diagnosis of a range of hearing conditions relating to children and adults,
  • Evidence of the ability to formulate treatment plans and record outcome measures for routine patients.
  • Commitment to improving clinical practice and the delivery of evidence based patient focused care
  • Understanding of the principles of governance.
  • Evidence of professional development and knowledge
