Consultant in Lung Cancer and Interventional Respiratory Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.

Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.

The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

Job overview

The Department of Respiratory Medicine is seeking two full-time (10 PA) Consultants to join the dynamic, enthusiastic and forward-thinking Lung cancer and Pleural teams.

The established and highly successful multidisciplinary thoracic cancers team at KHP provides diagnostic and therapeutic services to the local community, south east London and beyond. The purpose of the service is to ensure that local patients with suspected lung and other thoracic cancers are reviewed rapidly, experience high value collaborative and coordinated care wherever they need it. The guiding principles are right care and value-based healthcare.

This post is funded by GSTT and offers an excellent opportunity to join a first-class team working to deliver innovative pathways of care for the local respiratory population in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment, which is part of a wider Academic Health Sciences Centre.

This post is subject to the approval of the job description by the Royal College.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for providing consultant review for both inpatients and outpatients with suspected lung cancer and pleural disease. The post holder will be expected to work closely with the acute oncology and rapid diagnostic cancer service to improve management of patients with suspected/known lung cancer or malignant pleural disease admitted to acute wards at GSTT.

Working for our organisation

The Directorate of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care and Sleep based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ (forming part of the GSTT Heart Lung and Critical Care Clinical Group) is committed to delivering excellent patient care whilst meeting the Government targets.

A body of 20 Respiratory consultants also contribute to the care of general medical and high-dependency patients. The Lung cancer team currently includes Prof George Santis (KCL appointment), Dr Kimuli Ryanna (consultant physician at GSTT), 3 lung cancer clinical nurse specialists. Respiratory medicine has a close relationship with the GSTT Pathology service that provides expert pathology support for the EBUS service.

The Pleural team currently comprises Dr Owais Kadwani (consultant physician and pleural lead at GSTT), one pleural fellow, a pleural nurse specialist and a thoracic surgeon; providing a comprehensive, state-of-the-art service for patients with pleural disease. The service is further supported by excellent radiology and histopathology departments.  We run five day a week pleural lists, a joint physician/surgical pleural disease clinic and thoracoscopy lists., supported by a weekly MDM.

2WW  clinics are currently held at the Guy’s Cancer Centre and St Thomas’ Hospital. Bronchoscopy/EBUS lists are held at St Thomas’ Hospital. Pleural clinics are currently held at St Thomas’ Hospital . Currently, there is also a daily pleural list and weekly MDM.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan is anticipated to contain 10 Programmed Activities per week on average to be carried out on Guy’s & St Thomas’ sites and includes on-call commitments. This is an outline programme, and the post holder will be expected to discuss and agree on a detailed job plan, including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Director within 3 months of the start date.

The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and his/her clinical director at least annually.  Clinic templates depend on patient complexity in sub-specialty clinics; for General Respiratory clinics a template of 4 New patients and 6 Follow up appointments is expected per session.

The post also includes a commitment to acute medicine in the form of a slot on the acute medicine (on take) rota working alongside the Acute Medicine consultant team and the GIM/respiratory rota (inpatient care of patients on William Gull ward).
