Post 1 – Clinical Oncology – Gastrointestinal (Photons, Protons)

Clinical Responsibilities: Under the supervision of Dr. Douglas Brand and Prof. Maria Hawkins, GI Clinical Oncology consultants, you will be responsible for the comprehensive management of GI malignancies

Post 2 – Medical Oncology Targeted Therapy in Cholangiocarcinoma
Research Objectives: This role presents a unique opportunity to investigate resistance pathways and design targeted interventions for FGFR2-driven malignancies.

Main duties of the job
Post 1:
Responsibilities include participation in radiotherapy for GI cancers, utilizing advanced techniques such as photon IMRT, SBRT, and protons. You will actively engage in weekly GI oncology clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, and dedicated radiotherapy planning sessions.
Research Opportunities: Working alongside Dr. Douglas Brand, Dr. Steve Harris (Head of UCLH Clinical Research Informatics Unit), and Prof. Maria Hawkins, you will contribute to groundbreaking research endeavors. Focus areas include the development and testing of automated pipelines for clinical data extraction from UCLH Epic electronic health records. Additionally, you will explore cancer outcome predictive modelling, with a specific emphasis on predictors of outcomes to chemo-radiation in esophageal cancer.
Post 2:
Key Research Objectives:
- Describe the molecular progression of patients with FGFR2 fusion cholangiocarcinoma treated with FGFR2 inhibitors.
- Conduct high-depth exome sequencing to identify whether resistance pathways are present subclonally
- Design targeted interventions based on research findings.
Clinical Training and Responsibilities: In addition to research endeavors, the successful candidate will actively participate in clinical duties. Responsibilities include assisting in the management of cancer patients, supervision of junior staff, participation in the acute oncology service, prescription of chemotherapy, and engagement in radiotherapy planning meetings and sessions.

The Grafton Way Building opened in 2021, and comprises Proton Beam Therapy, Imaging, Theatres, ITU and Haematology Inpatient Service. UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre opened in April 2012 on the site of the old EGA building on Huntley Street. The building houses HCA, The Squire Garden, Haematology/Oncology daycare, outpatients, theatres, imaging, nuclear medicine and phlebotomy. Volunteers work throughout the Cancer Centre to help provide outstanding practical, emotional and financial support to patients, their carers and loved ones. The Macmillan Support and Information Service provides a range of support and information to all patients seen and treated in the Cancer Centre, and to any other patient with cancer treated elsewhere within the Trust. The PET/MR Unit operates the UK’s first PET/MR system, which includes both a PET camera and 3T MR scanner in the same physical unit so that both tests can be performed simultaneously in one single session.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Medical degree
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
- GMC registration
- Completed core medial training or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including Research governance) and understanding of current changes in the organisation and management structures of the NHS. Ability to act within these parameters
- POST 1 only: Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists
Experience
Desirable criteria
- POST 1 ONLY: Undergoing or completed higher specialist training in clinical oncology
- POST 1 ONLY: Experience in clinical oncology (post 1 only)
- Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Clinical audit experience
- Experience of laboratory research
- Publications in peer-reviewed medical journals
