Job overview

This is one of three Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist posts serving Northamptonshire. The principle duties will be with the Community Forensic Team and Low Secure Unit. The post holder will be responsible for his/her community forensic patients when admitted to the general psychiatric wards and PICU. The post holder will also be expected to take a leadership in one of three areas low secure, community forensic or criminal justice team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible primarily for service users aged 18 – 65 year olds but may exceptionally be required to provide advice or act as consultant outside these age ranges.

The post holder will be the consultant responsible for no more than 25 community patients countywide and Responsible Clinician for 3-6 low secure in-patients. Other duties will include tracking out-of-area patients predominantly in other secure facilities likely to return to Northamptonshire in-patient and/or Community Forensic Services.  Patients who require higher levels of security including admission to a medium or specialist low secure bed will be admitted to the appropriate facilities which will be outside the county. The post holder will play a lead role in liaising with these services as well as undertaking gate-keeping assessments for local and regional commissioners of secure care.

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • MRCPsych. or equivalent
  • • Full GMC Registration
  • • On Specialist Register/CCT in Forensic
  • • Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry with appropriate forensic experience (eg.one year forensic attachment as higher trainee) or eligible for inclusion within six months.
  • • Approval under Section12 of the Mental Health Act and able to act as Responsible Clinician.
  • • Minimum of six years postgraduate experience (including three years as SpR in approved training post) or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training.
Desirable criteria
  • • Additional Postgraduate Qualifications relevant to the practice of Forensic Psychiatry
  • • Publication of original research
  • • Management training

  • • An understanding of the use of security in the treatment of psychiatric patients.
  • • An understanding of the dynamics of working with damaged and disturbed patients.
