Job overview
This post within the Immunisation and Vaccine-Preventable Disease Division provides epidemiological and data management support across a number of areas.
The post holder will provide support for the production of routine reports on respiratory viruses. The post holder will be contributing to enhanced surveillance systems and research studies of respiratory diseases, and support the data collection and validation, and production of routine surveillance intelligence in these areas.
The post holder will contribute to surveillance activities through assuring data quality, undertaking complex data analyses and seeking to improve and enhance databases and systems. The post holder will also produce routine surveillance reports that include basic descriptive analyses and interpretation.
The post holder will support research through their contribution to scientific papers and projects as well as through designing study databases and sharing findings at conferences and meetings.
The post holder will also be required to undertake complex analytical tasks and use common statistical, database and mapping software and tools to support analysis such as producing tables, graphs, maps etc.
Main duties of the job
Surveillance and data analysis
- Maintain and improve databases for surveillance of infectious diseases, test functionality of new surveillance systems, validate the quality of surveillance data including use of automated routines and through audit and produce and update Standard Operating Procedures
- Have knowledge of, apply and interpret basic statistical tests, conduct statistical analyses of surveillance data, produce reports and outputs using common statistical/database/mapping tools such as Excel, Access, Stata, R, ArcGIS, SQL, etc, respond to routine and more complex data requests and produce routine surveillance reports, including basic descriptive analysis and interpretation of results
- Maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners
Research
- Contribute to scientific papers and projects on public health surveillance, outbreaks, and infectious disease control
- Design a study database, analyse data, create automated reports, import/export data from a variety of sources, participate in the interpretation and analysis of research findings and the application of findings to practice and present internally or to local partners, and poster presentations at scientific conferences
Software skills
- Undertake more complex analytical tasks using common software packages to support analysis
Communication
- Present internally or to local partners and present work at scientific meetings and conferences

Essential criteria (including qualifications, licenses and registrations):
- Educated to degree level in science or equivalent experience of working in an similar level in specialist area (in maintenance/analysis of data)
- Masters qualification in epidemiology, public health or allied discipline or equivalent experience of working at a similar level specialist area (in maintenance/analysis/interpretation of data).
- Knowledge or experience of basic statistical tests, performing descriptive epidemiology with strong analytical skills, excellent accuracy, and attention to detail
- Knowledge of principles and practice of surveillance, including data(base) management, data transmission, data security, data quality, data analysis including descriptive statistics and graphics and data reporting
- Experience of using computer and database software packages for epidemiological and statistical software packages
- Understand information governance including data protection and confidentiality requirements
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proven scientific report writing skills
- Proficient in a common statistical/database/mapping tool such as Excel, Access, Stata, R, GIS, SQL, etc.
- Able to maintain effective relationships with co-workers and key stakeholders
- Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills and able to work under own initiative
- An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships
Desirable criteria:
- Training or experience in validating data including automated routines

There will be a 30 minute Epidemiology and Statistical Software Test before the interview.

Location
This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our Scientific Campus in Colindale. We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month). If based at one of our scientific campuses, you will be required to have a minimum of a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. In exceptional circumstances UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder/Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.
Security Clearance Level Requirement
Successful candidates must pass a basic disclosure and barring security check.
Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Counter-terrorist Check .

Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
