Job overview

The UKHSA Acute Respiratory Infections Unit is based within the Tuberculosis, Acute Respiratory, Emerging/Zoonotic Infections and Travel Health (T.A.R.Z.E.T) Division of the Clinical and Emerging Infections Directorate. The Acute Respiratory Infections Unit’s public health function is to contribute to improved preparedness, prevention and control of acute respiratory infections including Legionella, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and zoonotic Influenza in humans in the United Kingdom through surveillance, guidance development, teaching, clinical advice and research.

Main duties of the job

Data collection and management

  • Maintenance and development of databases.
  • Monitor data submissions to ensure data archive is complete.
  • Process data submissions and ensure all data errors are processed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and improve data quality through validation and reconciliation.
  • Collation and summary of data using standard software packages.

Data Analysis and report production

  • Assist with the analysis of scientific data using standard information, statistical software packages and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Assist with the production of regular epidemiological outputs.
  • Create, follow and regularly review Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Respond to information requests and provide ad hoc data reports as and when required.

Data Governance & Quality

  • Be aware of, and put into practice, all policies and procedures to maintain confidentiality of patient information. To ensure data confidentiality and security in compliance with policies, the Data Protection Act, and other statutory requirements and principles in the handling, secure storage and dissemination of data.
  • Collaborate with other parts of UKHSA to support system wide audits across a range of public health programmes through data extraction and basic analysis.

Professional Development

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) in Biomedical Science, Epidemiology, Public Health, or related discipline.
  • Experience in data management, handling, analysis and reporting.
  • Using computers and good working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Understand information governance issues including an awareness of data protection and confidentiality requirement.
  • Communicate proactively, accurately and succinctly with the ability to negotiate in a friendly and tactful manner with a wide range of health, IT and academic professionals.
  • Able to prioritise and co-ordinate workload.
  • Work well on own initiative as well as in teams.
  • Deal with problems in a calm, efficient and timely manner.
  • Show sound numeracy skills and a good understanding of data presentation.
  • Produce accurate and consistent work, showing sound numeracy skills.
  • Demonstrate understanding of basic epidemiological terms and methods.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel to meetings and training across UKHSA sites.
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships.

Desirable criteria

  • Working in public health with the NHS, UKHSA or in a Local Authority or similar large organisation.
  • Working in communicable disease surveillance.

Location

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at our core HQ in Canary Wharf, London with attendance at our Scientific Campus in Colindale on occasion.

We offer great flexible working opportunities at UKHSA and operate using a hybrid working model where business needs allow. This provides us with greater flexibility about how and where we work, to get the best from our workforce. As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, (averaged over a month)working at our office. Our core HQ offices are modern and newly refurbished with excellent city centre transport links and benefit from co-location with other government departments such as the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Security Clearance Level Requirement 

Successful candidates must pass a basic disclosure and barring security check before they can be appointed.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Counter-Terrorist Check.

You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years to obtain Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting at this higher level and applicants should contact the Vacancy Holder / Recruiting Manager listed in the advert for further advice.

Salary Information

If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
