Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated GPhC Registered Pharmacy Technician (Band 4–5 dependent on experience) to join our Specialist Pharmacy Services team, supporting Oncology and Clinical Trials across UHMB.

Based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), you will work across the Clinical Trials facility (Ashton Suite) and the Pharmacy Oncology Office, contributing to a centralised service delivering safe and timely access to chemotherapy and investigational medicinal products (IMPs).

You will support a growing portfolio of commercial and non-commercial clinical trials, working in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and maintaining high standards of accuracy, governance, and documentation.

This role offers the opportunity to develop skills and experience across Oncology, Clinical Trials, Homecare, and Aseptic Services, within a small, highly specialised and supportive team.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities
- Assist in the provision of a high-quality chemotherapy  service 
-  Work within Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines when handling, dispensing, and managing clinical trial medications
- Ensure accurate and complete data recording, recognising that precision is essential to patient safety and trial integrity
- Support the dispensing, ordering, receipt, and accountability of clinical trial drugs and oncology medicines
- Maintain rigorous governance processes, including documentation, audit readiness, and adherence to policies and procedures
- Assist senior technicians in training and supervision of technicians, apprentices, and assistants
- Promote the safe, timely, and cost-effective use of medicines
- Contribute to a high-quality, patient-centred pharmaceutical service for both patients and staff

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals -the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

The RLI and FGH have a range of General Hospital services, with busy Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised pharmacy technician qualification
  • NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Service Skills or equivalent
  • Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Accredited checking qualification and registration with Northwest framework (equiv to NVQ level 4)
Desirable criteria
  • ACT Mentor
  • GCP accreditation
  • Assessor Award
  • Medicines reconciliation training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience in hospital Pharmacy or other Pharmacy setting
  • Experience in dispensing medications, drugs receipt, record keeping and cold chain maintenance
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of hospital pharmacy and aseptics
  • Experience with clinical Audit and data analysis
  • Experience in specialist

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy procedures, practices and legislation including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
  • Good manual, accuracy and analytical dispensing skills
  • Working knowledge of training requirements for technical / support posts
  • Ability to motivate self and others and lead a team
  • Ability to talk to / communicate with patients, carers and healthcare professionals clearly
  • Good influencing and teaching skills
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft word and skills for dispensing and record keeping
Desirable criteria
  • Further computing skills e.g. presentations and spreadsheets

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
