An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist to join the Gastrointestinal (GI) Physiology team at Bristol Royal Infirmary on a permanent 0.36 WTE (13.5 hours per week) basis.
The successful applicant will work within a friendly, experienced multidisciplinary team providing specialist diagnostic and conservative management services for patients with upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders. The role includes performing, interpreting and reporting a range of GI physiology investigations, delivering high-quality patient-centred care, and contributing to service development, clinical governance, education and quality improvement.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Clinical Scientist who is passionate about delivering high-quality specialist care and helping to further develop an innovative and expanding GI Physiology service.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred GI Physiology services, working both independently and as part of the multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Performing, interpreting and reporting specialist GI Physiology investigations, including upper and lower gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures.
- Delivering safe, effective and evidence-based patient care throughout the diagnostic pathway.
- Supporting conservative management clinics where appropriate, providing patient education and advice.
- Communicating clinical findings effectively to referring clinicians and contributing to multidisciplinary team discussions.
- Maintaining high standards of clinical governance through audit, quality improvement, service evaluation and adherence to national guidelines.
- Participating in service development to improve patient pathways, access and efficiency.
- Supporting the education, training and supervision of trainees, students and other healthcare professionals as required.
- Maintaining professional competence through continuing professional development and compliance with HCPC and departmental standards.
- Contributing to a flexible, supportive team environment to ensure the delivery of a high-quality specialist GI Physiology service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will work as part of the Gastrointestinal (GI) Physiology team, providing specialist diagnostic investigations and contributing to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care for patients with upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders.
The post holder will be expected to work autonomously within their scope of practice, undertaking specialist GI Physiology investigations, interpreting findings and producing accurate clinical reports to support diagnosis and patient management.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform, interpret and report specialist GI Physiology investigations in accordance with local policies, national guidance and professional standards.
- Deliver high-quality, patient-centred care throughout the diagnostic pathway, ensuring patients are fully informed and supported during procedures.
- Provide specialist clinical advice and communicate investigation findings effectively to referring clinicians and members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Contribute to conservative management services, providing evidence-based patient education and support where appropriate.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team working to support the management of patients with gastrointestinal disorders.
- Maintain high standards of clinical governance through audit, quality improvement, incident reporting and compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Support service development and innovation to improve patient pathways, service efficiency and quality of care.
- Participate in the education, training and supervision of trainees, students and other healthcare professionals as required.
- Maintain professional registration and competence through continuing professional development, ensuring compliance with HCPC standards and departmental mandatory training requirements.
- Contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the GI Physiology service, supporting colleagues and providing flexibility to meet service needs.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration
- MSc Clinical Science (Gastrointestinal Physiology) or equivalent recognised qualification.
Desirable criteria
- AGIP accreditation
- Higher degree (MPhil/PhD) or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
- Registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) or relevant professional body.
- Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD)
