Job overview
· To ensure the provision of Occupational Therapy approaches in the treatment of women with perinatal mental health problems, focussing primarily on the assessment of functional needs.
· Manage a caseload for women who are referred to the Perinatal Mental Health Service
· To carry out initial assessments and the planning of group and individual therapy interventions in collaboration with adults who have a diagnosis of Perinatal Mental Health Service
· To manage a defined caseload, using evidence based /client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
· To regularly supervise Occupational Therapy students on practice placement
· To provide leadership for junior staff, as delegated by the supervisor
· To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the Occupational Therapy Service within the Perinatal Mental Health Service
· To participate in the delivery of training and consultancy for other therapists and practitioners working with the Perinatal Mental Health Service across the region
Main duties of the job

· To select and apply Occupational Therapy Assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the client in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure. · To undertake generic initial assessments and collaboratively identify with the client priorities for therapy · To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work. · To undertake the OT assessment of clients using investigative and analytical skills to formulate individual treatment plans · To accept clinical responsibility under supervision for a designated case load some with complex presentations prioritising need and taking on the role of co-ordinator where relevant. · To plan and implement client-centred individual and group interventions, using clinical reasoning and a range of treatment interventions to achieve therapeutic goals. · To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for clients in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention

Qualification
Essential criteria
- Diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy
- Practice Placement qualification within 12 months of appointment
Experience
Essential criteria
- Documented evidence of Continuing professional development
- Experience working with women with serious mental illness
- In-patient and/or community mental health OT clinical experience
- Post registration experience relevant to clinical area as an Occupational Therapist
- Team working
Desirable criteria
- Post registration experience in relevant clinical setting
- Experience of research and audit
- Supervision of junior staff and/or students
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of Occupational Therapy models of practice
- Up to date knowledge of evidence based practice and current developments in perinatal psychiatry
- Awareness and knowledge of factors and developments specifically relating to O.T. within perinatal psychiatry
- Knowledge of mental illness in the perinatal period
- Application of the Occupational Therapy process with designated client group
- Assessment and planning of therapy intervention
- Group process skills
- Computer literacy
- Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to identify, recognise and understand safeguarding children issues and refer appropriately
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Ability to manage own workload and determine priorities
- Ability to work effectively from diverse minority ethnic and cultural backgrounds and families with a high level of deprivation, social isolation, exclusion and stigma.
