Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join our Health & Wellbeing Service. This is an exciting opportunity to support the delivery of high-quality physical health care within community-based clinics, helping people to improve their health and wellbeing outcomes.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will provide a range of clinical interventions including phlebotomy, ECG recording and physical health monitoring under the supervision of registered practitioners.

This role would suit someone who is skilled in clinical interventions, enjoys patient-facing work, has strong communication skills and is committed to delivering safe, person-centred care.

 As an apprentice within RDaSH you will be given the opportunity to gain experience, learn work-related skills and obtain all the tools needed to thrive.

An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation.  Around 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.  This leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake venepuncture (phlebotomy) clinics following Trust policies and procedures.
  • Perform and accurately record 12-lead ECGs.
  • Complete and record routine physical health observations.
  • Support physical health assessments and health screening programmes.
  • Welcome, prepare and support patients attending Health & Wellbeing clinics.
  • Ensure specimens are appropriately labelled, documented and transported.
  • Maintain accurate electronic patient records using Trust information systems.
  • Monitor and replenish clinic stock and consumables.
  • Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control.
  • Escalate any concerns relating to patient health, safety or wellbeing in line with Trust procedures.
  • Support individuals experiencing mental health difficulties with dignity, compassion and respect.
  • Develop positive therapeutic relationships with service users, carers and families.
  • Recognise signs of mental health distress, relapse or deterioration and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Support individuals to engage with treatment plans, physical health monitoring and wellbeing interventions.
  • Contribute to risk assessment processes by reporting observations to registered staff.
  • Promote social inclusion, independence and self-management where appropriate.
  • Support service users who may experience anxiety, depression, severe mental illness or emotional distress when attending clinics.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of stigma and the impact of mental illness on physical health outcomes.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9-4 or A*- C or functional skills level 2)
  • NVQ Level 2 in a related subject
  • NVQ level 3 in related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of recording physiological observations
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience of working with those with mental health issues

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice.
Desirable criteria
  • Understand and apply recovery-focused principles in everyday practice
  • Understand social inclusion, independence and self-management for those with mental health issues.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of stigma and the impact of mental illness on physical health outcomes

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Competency in venepuncture/phlebotomy.
  • Competency in undertaking and recording ECGs
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
