Consultant in Older Adult Mental Health - Community Psychiatry

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

The post-holder will provide sessional Consultant input into the Older Persons’ Recovery Team and the MSNAP accredited Memory Assessment and Treatment Service. Working as a member of multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will provide Consultant clinical input including face to face patient assessment for complex cases and be one of the senior medical leads. This post makes up a total whole-time equivalence of 1.4wte Older People’s Psychiatrists within the community directorate (there is another 0.8wte Psychiatrist – the post holders will work closely together to deliver the borough-wide community services). There is 1wte Older Adult Psychiatrist who works across the Acute Directorate. The clinical care of patients under these teams will be timely and tailored to the needs of patients and carers. The consultant will be expected to have a flexible weekly timetable designed to respond in a timely and reasonable manner to the needs of patients and carers as well as of team members for support and advice as necessary. The post-holder will work through advice and supervision with direct patient contact as required; this is a district-wide service with rapid throughput of patients and a need for prompt and flexible decision making. This more fluid style of working does not allow for easy quantification of workload. The Consultant is expected to manage their own diary as they determine, with the support of a secretary.

Main duties of the job

The formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Care Group Director / Care Group Medical Director, three months after the commencement date of the appointee. This will be signed by the Care Group Director and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment. It is proposed that the job plan for the first 3 months will be based on the provisional timetable as found in the job description/person specification document.
