Job overview
This is an exciting time to join RDASH & in particular the Doncaster Care Group, as one of the Consultant Psychiatrists serving Older People's Mental Health services. You will have the opportunity to work flexibly across the community mental health teams, the enhanced care home team, as well as the young onset dementia service. You will work closely alongside other consultant psychiatrists, nurse consultants, substantive specialty doctors/multidisciplinary teams.
The older people’s services in Doncaster cover two main localities, each combining two sub-localities, each served by a community mental health team (CMHT). These are North, South, East & Central.
Each of the 2 main localities are served by a Consultant Psychiatrist, a Nurse Consultant & a multidisciplinary team. Two substantive SAS doctor cover two of the sub localities. The older adult CMHTs liaise regularly & closely with the one 20 bedded inpatient unit (Windermere) located on Tickhill Road to ensure safe flow of all patients into & from the unit.

Main duties of the job
- The post-holder will be expected to work in a flexible manner, supporting the multi-professional teams as per determined need & deliver care across the range of older adult community and enhanced care settings served. The post holder will offer and benefit from reciprocal cover for annual & study leave, & other determined circumstances as per clinical need and acuity, and to support professional activities.
- The post holder will provide some support into the enhanced care home team and support the nurses on diagnosis & management of patients in 24hr care. In addition, the post holder will also work with the young onset dementia service.
- The post holder will have continued responsibility for the care of the patients in his or her care, which include the administrative duties associated with the care of the patient & the running of the clinical team.
- The post holder is expected to work in both organic & functional aspects of mental health services for older adults in the community.
- The post holder will provide flexible medical leadership, consultation, advice & guidance within the community mental health teams, ensuring that care & treatment are safe and effective, efficient and within national guidelines.
- The post holder will provide medical assessment, diagnosis & formulation to appropriate patients. On completion of assessment, advise on diagnosis and treatment within the teams will be delivered and communicated to relevant referrers.

Essential criteria
- That applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of A/I application – Overall 7.5, Speaking 7.5, Reading 7.5, and Writing 7.5. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.
- Clinical supervision experience/skills.
- The aptitude and potential to develop a leadership role within the service with special emphasis on leading on quality and clinical standards and engaging in service improvement.
- Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work.
Desirable criteria
- Ability to undertake training/mentoring of medical staff in junior grades and enthusiasm for education.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience within Older Adult psychiatry.
- Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of care settings.
Desirable criteria
- Prior experience working as a Consultant in Older Adult Psychiatry.
- Evidence of development of special interest.
- Proven commitment to improving quality of clinical care.
- Sound knowledge of NHS management structures and systems
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC and license to practice
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Older Adult Psychiatry or a trainee within six months of completing their CCT.
Desirable criteria
- MRCPsych or equivalent higher qualification.
- Higher Specialist Training in Older Adult Psychiatry (e.g. SpR scheme)
- Management qualification.
- MD, Management qualification, other professional qualification (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of research processes
- Committed to Continuing Professional Development
- Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
- Other special interest/expertise relevant to the post
- Approved or eligible for approval under Section 12(2) of MHA 1983
- Approved or eligible for Approved Clinician Status.
