Job overview
To provide clinical leadership within the Forensic Outreach Liaison Service (FOLS) in accordance with agreed service and directorate objectives and operating procedures. The post holder will provide highly specialist psychological assessment, formulation, intervention, consultation and risk management for individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism who present with complex trauma, offending behaviour and forensic risk. The post holder will also contribute to service development, research, audit, supervision, teaching and professional leadership within the service.

A Unique Opportunity Across Two Specialist Forensic Services Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced and motivated Practitioner Psychologist (Forensic or Clinical) to provide leadership and specialist psychological expertise across two established forensic services.
Within FOLS, you will support people with learning disabilities and/or autism who present with complex trauma, offending behaviours and forensic risks. Within SCFT, you will work with individuals affected by mental illness and/or personality disorder who have offended, or who present a risk of offending and causing harm to themselves or others.
This is an exciting opportunity to influence clinical practice, support multidisciplinary teams and help shape the future of specialist forensic services across Doncaster and North Lincolnshire.
The Role
You will:
- Provide highly specialist psychological assessment, formulation, intervention and risk management.
- Offer expert consultation and advice to multidisciplinary teams and partner agencies.
- Lead on complex forensic and clinical cases across both services.
- Supervise and support psychology colleagues, trainees and wider team members.
- Contribute to service development, research, audit and innovation.
- Help develop psychologically informed approaches that improve outcomes and reduce risk.

Essential criteria
- Post-graduate training in forensic or clinical psychology (as accredited by the BPS and HCPC) with registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
Desirable criteria
- Post-doctoral training in additional specialised areas of psychological practice e.g. risk assessment, autism, personality disorder, substance dependence etc.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Assessed experience of working as a qualified forensic or clinical psychologist for a minimum of six years, including at least 3 years post qualification experience within learning disability, working with clients with ‘forensic’ needs, either in secure or non-secure settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, inpatient, custodial, and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
- Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for patients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multi -disciplinary care plan.
- Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision. Doctoral level knowledge of forensic or clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of applied psychology. Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the patient group and mental health.
- Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS.
- Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of professional management of qualified and pre-qualified psychologists.
- Experience of multi professional management of teams or services within the designated specialty.
- Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
- A high-level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and nonprofessional groups
- Enthusiasm for a broad range of psychological phenomena, an interest in models of service delivery, and an ability to articulate the value added by forensic or clinical psychology services within the context of multi-disciplinary mental health services.
- Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
Desirable criteria
- Record of having published in peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books.
- Experience of working within a multicultural framework.
- Ability to demonstrate leadership and management skills
- A commitment to the evaluation of services, enthusiasm for both multiprofessional and uni-professional audit, and a wish to continue to develop expertise in the service area.
