Locum Consultant
Liverpool Women’s NHS FT became part of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG) in November 2024, following the coming together with Liverpool University Hospitals NHS FT. UHLG was born from a shared aim to improve the care we provide to our patients.
UHLG is one of the largest employers in the region, with over 16,800 colleagues who are dedicated to caring for our communities - from birth and beyond. For the 630,000 people across Merseyside, UHLG is also their local NHS, providing general and emergency hospital care, alongside highly specialised regional services for more than two million people in the North West.
At Liverpool Women’s Hospital, each year we deliver approximately 7,500 babies, carry out around 50,000 gynaecological inpatient and outpatient procedures, care for over 1,000 poorly and premature newborns, perform around 1,000 IVF cycles, and conduct over 4,000 genetic appointments.
We believe that this, along with a strong dedication to research and innovation, makes us the specialist health provider of choice in Europe for women, babies and families.

Job overview
This post is to provide, develop and expand services including High Dependency Care, Maternal Critical Care, and Gynaecology including Reproductive Medicine, Gynecological Oncology & Robotic Surgeries and Obstetrics provided at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. The department expects and promotes good teaching and training for junior anaesthetic staff and the successful appointees will contribute in this area along with providing training for other groups of staff within the Trust.
Supporting professional activity time (SPA) is offered initially as 1.5 PA (6hrs) for purposes of, among others, continuing professional development, enhanced appraisal and revalidation, with further SPAs granted after agreement of a job plan with the Clinical Director and Medical Director.
The post holder will have adequate office accommodation and secretarial support. Funding is available for appropriate study leave and Continuing Professional Development. We are seeking doctors who are on the Specialist Register in Anaesthesia and hold the FRCA or equivalent.
The successful candidate will have recent, wide knowledge and experience of high risk obstetric anaesthesia and suitable experience of anaesthesia for high dependency care especially for obstetrics and gynaecology. The candidate will be expected to take an active part in the Society of Mersey Obstetric Anaesthesia and Obstetric Anaesthesia Association activities.
Main duties of the job
A core component of this post is a clinical commitment to the Trust’s Main Delivery Suite and is intended to provide the appointee with the opportunity of continuing and expanding the obstetric anaesthetic services already established at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. The work on delivery suite encompasses elective and emergency obstetric anesthesia in supporting the busy unit.
It is envisaged that twilight sessions may become necessary in the future and this will be under review.
Close teamwork with anaesthetic, obstetric and midwifery colleagues are essential, as this is a tertiary referral center for complicated obstetric problems. Taking part and developing the high dependency care along with routine obstetric anaesthesia and analgesic tasks is a pleasant and challenging field to teach trainees and develop research active in the department and Trust.
