Locum Consultant in Orthodontics

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Welcome to Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and thank you for your interest.

In addition to receiving tertiary referrals from across the South East of England, we have a network  of ‘spoke’ sites at district general hospitals enabling our consultants to offer their expertise with routine treatments and consultations as close to patients’ homes as is possible. With the recent addition of video led ‘virtual’ consultations we also enable patients who have some distance to travel to avoid the additional stress and worry of a long journey.

Working at QVH combines the excitement, challenge and career opportunities of many larger organisations with the satisfaction of delivering excellent patient care that really does re-build our patients’ lives.

We also offer attractive benefits such as

  • tailored personal development to support career aspirations, including accredited clinical and management development programmes
  • flexible working arrangements for a work-life balance that suits you and your needs
  • a dedicated reward programme, offering a range of national and local discounts, cashback and tax relief schemes

The Trust is committed to offering a range of flexible working options to support employees to balance work and personal commitments, and the delivery of high quality and cost effective services.

Sustainability

At Queen Victoria Hospital we want to be the first Net Zero Hospital in England, and to achieve that wants every member of staff to be a green champion.  The way in which the Trust works has a significant impact on the organisation’s carbon footprint and that of our patients. From the heat, light and power supplies within the hospital to avoiding unnecessary patient journeys, the Trust is empowering all staff to create a sustainable health and care environment for future generations. The Trust expects all staff to reuse and recycle more, to use energy and water efficiently, to walk or cycle to work if you can, and to have a focus on sustainability in the workplace.

Job overview

The post holder will provide Locum Consultant Orthodontic services within the Orthodontic Unit at Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH). While the current job plan is based at QVH, it may be subject to future review and adjustment to meet the evolving needs of this growing and developing service.

The Orthodontic Department is housed within a modern, purpose-built facility comprising nine fully equipped clinical surgeries, designed to support the delivery of high-quality patient care. Each surgery has access to the Hospital Intranet, departmental databases, and Dolphin orthodontic treatment planning software, facilitating efficient clinical management and multidisciplinary working.

The department has embraced a comprehensive digital workflow, incorporating intraoral scanning technology alongside established digital photography, radiography, and 3D treatment planning platforms. This advanced technological infrastructure supports accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care, ensuring the department remains at the forefront of modern orthodontic practice.

Main duties of the job

The configuration of responsibilities will be reviewed periodically to ensure that service requirements continue to be met. The post holder will be expected to work closely with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide a high-quality, responsive, and efficient orthodontic service.

In collaboration with consultant colleagues, the appointee will be responsible for the provision and development of the following services:

  • Providing consultant-led orthodontic services for the population served by Queen Victoria Hospital and the surrounding catchment area.
  • Actively participating as an integrated and collaborative member of the Orthodontic Department, promoting excellence in patient care and service delivery.
  • Contributing to the strategic development and continuous improvement of orthodontic services at Queen Victoria Hospital.

  • Providing specialist advice and guidance to dental and medical practitioners working within primary care settings.
  • Providing expert orthodontic advice to hospital clinicians, including consultants in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Special Care Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Paediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Sleep Medicine, and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) services.
