Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the South Yorkshire Service for Deaf People with Mental Health Needs working with BSL users in contact with mental health teams across South Yorkshire.
This part-time post will work alongside secondary mental health teams, Primary Care mental health teams, crisis/home treatment teams and inpatient services to provide specialist assessment and interventions for deaf people who use BSL.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work in conjunction with secondary and primary care mental health teams (including crisis, Home Treatment teams and inpatient wards) across South Yorkshire (Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield) and work into RDaSH, Sheffield Partnership and SWYT NHS Trusts. They will provide specialist mental health assessments which incorporate deaf culture and communication, and provide specialist interventions that meet the deaf person’s needs.
They will also have some responsibility for delivering, developing and supporting the equality and inclusion agenda as part of the Deaf mental health service. They will have a good understanding of deaf culture in relation to mental health and/or BSL skills and/or have worked with deaf service users previously in conjunction with the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health and Deaf People.
The post holder will provide supervision to the Deaf Peer Project Support Worker.

Essential criteria
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and nonprofessional groups.
- Ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds
- Good report writing/documentation of patient notes
- Ability to manage priorities and demanding workloads
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
- Clear communication verbally/in BSL and in writing to effectively convey knowledge and information
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Relevant national legislation and policy: - personalised care, Mental Health Act; Safeguarding adults; Safeguarding children.
- Excellent knowledge of risk assessment and risk management.
Desirable criteria
- Good knowledge of mental health and/or deaf community services
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of delivering therapeutic interventions in a mental health setting, including working with deaf patients.
- Good understanding of Deaf culture in relation to mental health
- Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
- Experience of being supervised and supervising, monitoring and supporting other personnel (including students) in the work environment
Desirable criteria
- Experience of assessing and treating clients across a number of care settings.
- Experience of planning and delivering training in response to identified needs.
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Professionally registered qualified clinician e.g. RMN, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist
- Post registration qualification plus equivalent experience and evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
- BSL Level 3/4 qualification or native BSL user
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
Desirable criteria
- BSL level 6 qualification
- Management or leadership qualification and/or training
