Job overview

Join our Gastroenterology team

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Specialist in Gastroenterology to join our ambitious and compassionate team at St Mary’s Hospital.

This post offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to gastroenterology services for a defined Island population, working as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team at St Mary’s Hospital. You will be comfortable working with appropriate professional autonomy while recognising the importance of multidisciplinary working and strong clinical leadership. You will contribute positively to the development of the service, support junior colleagues and play an active role in maintaining high standards of clinical governance, education and patient care.

It is an opportunity not only to deliver excellent clinical care but also to help shape and develop the future of gastroenterology services on the Isle of Wight.

If you are an enthusiastic and forward-thinking clinician looking for your next opportunity in Gastroenterology, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist in Gastroenterology, you will provide a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology service alongside general medical responsibilities.

Working within the agreed job plan, you will take responsibility, with appropriate professional autonomy, for the diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of general medical and gastroenterology patients.

Your duties will include:

  • Inpatient gastroenterology care
  • Outpatient gastroenterology clinics
  • Endoscopy
  • General medical duties
  • Participation in the general medical emergency on-call rota
  • Clinical administration
  • Multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Supervision and management of junior medical staff
  • Teaching and supporting the development of colleagues
  • Clinical audit and governance
  • Continuing professional development
  • Working collaboratively with clinical and operational colleagues to support safe, effective and efficient services

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and committed doctor who will work collaboratively with colleagues across the service, combining professional autonomy with a strong commitment to safe, effective and patient-centred care and who is passionate about delivering high-quality gastroenterology and general medical care.

Working for our organisation

Working for our Trust brings a variety of benefits, including an onsite day nursery, cycle-to-work scheme, discounts at local businesses and gyms, and the opportunity to hire Trust’s beach hut in Ryde. We offer many flexible working opportunities, speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement for you and if it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

The Isle of Wight is a unique and stunning gem located off the South Coast of England, a short ferry journey from Portsmouth and Southampton, with journey times taking from as little as 10 minutes. London can be reached in 90 minutes by rail from Southampton or Portsmouth. The island offers an amazing coastline with beautiful countryside, year-round events, festivals and award-winning attractions.
