Job overview

A vacancy for a full time band 6, Chaplaincy Team Leader has arisen at Westmorland General Hospital.    

Alongside key pastoral skills; the ideal candidate will demonstrate that they are: energetic, entrepreneurial, a committed team player, whilst being able to work independently, with excellent communication skills.  This post has a strong focus on building community links with faith and third sector groups.  It includes a dedicated focus on mental health.   

The ability to initiate and manage project work is a key skill.  

Candidates need a demonstrable awareness of the changing spiritual and cultural landscape in which healthcare provision operates.  

Whilst the position is based at Westmorland General Hospital a dedicated amount of weekly time will be at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.  The 3 main sites at UHMBT have a minimum of 20 miles between each, flexibility in working is essential.  

In the first instance priority will be given to an ordained minister in the Anglican Church or a member be of the Free Churches Together in England.  This follows a statistical examination that shows a staffing demographic with an increasing Christian population and the wider demographic served by the Trust consistent with statement in the most recent census: ‘The English local authorities with the highest percentage of people reporting their religion as “Christian” were all in areas in the North West’  

Main duties of the job

To assist in the provision of a service which meets the diverse Religious, Spiritual and Pastoral needs of those working in, and cared for by, the Trust. To work collaboratively as a member of the Trust wide Team and to lead the Chaplaincy Team, on the designated site, which incorporates Roman Catholic and Free Church Chaplains and Volunteers. To be able to build effective links with other institutions and organisations around the remit of healthcare and to help develop and maintain high standards of professional chaplaincy.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
