Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a qualified Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) to join Adult Community Psychological Services in North East Essex. The psychological practitioners in the team work closely in a supportive, integrated MDT to provide a specialist psychology service to  adult service users. This post is based at across the Colchester and Tendring areas.

Candidates must have completed, or be near to completing, a Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) Master's training programme.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Associates in Psychology fill an identified skills gap between assistant psychologists and qualified psychologists. They are able to practice autonomously with appropriate support, working within their scope of practice, under the supervision of a registered clinical psychologist.

The post holder will work alongside qualified Psychologists, together with the wider network of Secondary Care MDT colleagues. This will involve the development and provision of group and individual therapies, and monitoring and evaluation of these. The service is responsible for ensuring high quality, evidence based psychological interventions are accessible to people with complex needs, and often in the context of high levels of risk. 

The successful applicant will join our professional and friendly team of psychologists and psychological therapists who specialist in a range of models of therapy, including CBT, CAT, EMDR, DBT, Family Therapy, ACT, CFT, and Sensory-Motor Psychotherapy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical: 

Under supervision CAPs:

  • Provide assessment, formulation and intervention recommendations for complex clinical presentations, within their scope of practice.
  • Be capable of making judgements about the needs of individuals, the identification of potential risks, and the possible requirement for more specialist assessment and treatment.
  • Be capable of weighing conflicting components pertaining to a complex problem or situation
  • Monitor their own effectiveness with each service user and/or the presenting problem, to determine whether consultation or supervision from a colleague is required
  • Ensure referral to designated supervisor is promptly made when case complexity falls out with their own range of competency. Use a range of assessment measures and procedures that are compatible with service user presenting problems.
