Job overview

This is a replacement post due to the current postholder moving to the role of clinical director. This is an exciting time to join the service as it has recently undergone a period of expansion due to new funding opportunities, with roles being added to the service across a range of professional disciplines, increasing the breadth of interventions that can be provided to our complex needs patient group. ABSDAS clinicians contribute widely to training and development in addictions across the health board and wider, with links into the University of South Wales and Cardiff University. In addition, the service has been at the forefront of a number of recent innovations in addiction treatment provision (such as development of Buvidal treatment services and pathways for patients with Alcohol Related Brain Damage).

Main duties of the job

This job is located primarily in the North ABSDAS Team base at Hiraeth in Maindiff Court Hospital, Abergavenny. Some clinics are held on site and there is a specified clinical room for this purpose. Other clinics are held at community bases across Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire and Torfaen. There is no dispensary on site and most medication is dispensed via community pharmacies. Buvidal is stored and administered both at the team base and at other clinics.

ABSDAS is a Gwent-wide complex needs addiction service and has teams covering Newport, Caerphilly and the North of the county. Clinics are provided in a variety of settings (secondary care settings, third sector buildings, GP surgeries) as well as some in-reach into local hospitals. The team is made up of a variety of professionals including consultants in addiction psychiatry, occasional CT3 and/or ST5 trainees in psychiatry, mental health nurses, general nurses, a senior therapist, psychologists, occupational therapist, support workers and peer mentors.
