Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a band 3 nursing assistant to join our specialist gynaecology and early pregnancy department, which offers a range of both inpatient and outpatient services. The successful applicant will work between the service covering both inpatients and outpatients.  

 

You will be joining a friendly team that provides a variety of women’s health services including; early pregnancy services, termination clinics, gynaecology assessment and inpatient gynaecology elective and emergency cases.

 

The successful applicant will need to be organised, self-motivated, friendly, a good team player and be able to provide empathetic care to our patients, especially to those who are undergoing early pregnancy complications and miscarriage.

 

This position is covering maternity leave, so if for a fixed term only

 

Certificate of sponsorship

Please note that Certificate of Sponsorship is not available for this role as it does not meet the minimum salary requirements for the health and care visa (which is a sub category of the skilled worker visa). Currently the salary requirement is £23’200 per annum for the health and care or £38’700 per annum for the skilled worker route.

Main duties of the job

This role involves providing nursing assistant care to a group of ward inpatients and outpatients, using additional advanced skills such as:

·       ECG

·       Bladder scanning

·       Simple dressings

·       Trial without catheter

·       Phlebotomy

·       Cannulation

 

·       Developing the skills and knowledge in gynaecology and early pregnancy, which will allow you to support the nursing team to competently deliver high quality patient centred care to this group of patients.

 

·       It is essential you have at least 1 years’ experience working as nursing assistant in an acute healthcare setting. Training will be provide for the advanced skills required for the role.

 

·       Previous experience of caring for surgical patients would be an advantage and a keen interest in Women’s Health is essential.

·       You would be expected to assist in Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) and your skills will be developed, so you can support the Nurse in Charge.

·       Actively follow guidelines and protocols in supporting women who attend our service to ensure we meet the best possible outcomes.

 

·       Deliver equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals. Maintaining confidentiality at all times.

 

Accurate record keeping, IT literate and experience of ecare would be beneficial.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse on duty, the post holder will be expected to:

 

1.       Support and deliver a range of clinical activities within the work area including working with women undergoing termination of pregnancy (it is vital that the post holder has no conscientious objection)

 

2.       To assist in the delivery of daily personal care activity with patients e.g. hygiene and nutritional needs, as directed in the individual plan of care needs, observing and reporting specific changes to senior staff and documenting care given

 

3.       Communicate effectively and professionally with multidisciplinary members of the care team patients and their family/carers, on care related issues

 

4.       Participate in and support the practice developments/initiatives in support of the service

 

5.       Provide and support training and development activity with the nursing assistant workforce

 

 

1.         Communication:

1.       To work as a member of the ward team, establishing effective communication networks across the  multidisciplinary team and wards/departments of the Trust and with patients/relatives and carers and offering support to colleagues and requesting assistance as necessary.

2.       To establish professional relationships with patients/relatives/carers, communicating with them in ways that  respect their views, beliefs and culture, and being aware of own response to distressing circumstances.

3.       To report to the Ward Manager / Senior Nurse on duty in a timely manner, information relating to all work activity, e.g. identifying significant changes in relation to direct patient care/treatment plans

4.       To act as advocate for patients’ individual needs and choices

5.       To identify ways of overcoming potential barriers to effective communication.

6.       To demonstrates verbal communication through the ability to give basic information and support to individuals. To listen effectively and modify communication to individual needs.

7.       To demonstrates written communication through the ability to record accurate, clear and legible reports and      documentation.

8.       To escalate clinical concerns to the relevant Registered Nurse as per escalation policies in a timely manner.

9.       Answer the telephone and relay messages accurately, courteously and competently

 

 

2.         Leading/Managing care (within delegated responsibilities for a group of patients:

1.       Works collaboratively with the inter-professional team and other staff on the ward/department

2.       Ensures all emergencies, untoward incidents, complaints and grievances are reported in accordance with Trust Policies

3.       Is fully conversant with all policies and procedures, including Major Accident, Resuscitation, Fire, Health and Safety, and acts within them.

4.       Contributes to the effective and efficient use of resources. Including safe use, checking, maintenance and storage of equipment.

5.       Manages own time and responds to unexpected demands in a professional manner

 

 

3.         Clinical & Delivery of Care:

 

      Hygiene

                         Assist patients with the maintenance of their personal and oral hygiene, including:

·     Washing and bathing

·     Mouth and dental care

·     Hair-washing

·     Nail care

·     Shaving

·     Dressing and undressing

·     Observe and report any changes/damage to patient’s skin to identify pressure ulcer risk as part of the daily routineElimination

 

·   Assist patients to use toilet facilities

·   Record and monitor output; identify and report any abnormalities in body waste

·   Undertake established stoma care and long-term catheter care

 

    Mobility

 

·   Assist patients with mobility using manual handling risk assessment and safe manual handling

·   Contribute to the movement and positioning of patients (using safe moving and handling techniques), to maximise their physical comfort and prevent the adverse effects of pressure. To encourage patient’s own independence

·   Be aware of how equipment works and report any faults

 

   Nutrition

 

·   Assist patients to eat and drink as per identified care needs; identifying, recording and reporting abnormal dietary and fluid intake

·   Assist patients with the completion of menus

 

 

 

4.            Clinical Duties:

 

              Measure and observe the physical characteristics/condition of patients as follows:

·     Temperature

·     Pulse

·     Respiration

·     Blood pressure (lying and standing also)

·     Peak flows

·     Weight and girth

·     NEWS/CREWS/MEOWS

·     Oxygen saturation

Use of assessment tools to document pain Obtain specimens as requested and carry out relevant investigations by utilising the following essential clinical skills:

·     Phlebotomy

·     Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation

·     Bladder Scan

·     MRSA initial screening

·     Covid swabs

·     ECG

·     Simple dressings

·     Trail without catheter (TWOC)

·     Chaperone

 

·   To document the results, reporting them to registered practitioner as necessary.

·   Adhere to the basic principles of infection control demonstrating effective hand hygiene and awareness of potential cross infection.

·   Prepare and support patients undergoing clinical activities and recovering from clinical interventions. Accompany patients to other wards/departments as required.

·   Undertake end of life care, providing support to family and colleagues.

·   Undertake basic cleaning and decontamination of communal equipment between patient use and/or storage.Obtain specimens as requested and carry out relevant investigations by utilising the following essential clinical skills:

·       To include practical skills demonstration to nursing assistants new to the clinical area.

·       To establish and lead on an aspect of care in a link role, disseminating changes and up to date information to the work team

 

6.         Administration Support:

·       To be able to use e-care efficiently

 

7.         Resource and Management of Equipment:

·       To ensure that specific equipment is well maintained, stored appropriately and comply with health and safety regulations.

·       To liaise with EBME as necessary depending on the above.

·       To ensure maintenance of agreed stock levels for speciality specific items, initiating timely reordering

 

8.         Personal and Professional Development:

·       To prepare and actively participate in the Trust’s annual performance development review process and progress reviews.

·       To undertake relevant activities to meet the development objectives as identified through the performance review process with the Ward manager, and to share learning with colleagues as agreed.

·       To be responsible for complying with all Trust policies and clinical guidelines.

·       Contributes to service and practice development initiatives within the clinical setting.

·       Demonstrates critical reflection skills and the learning gained from experience.

·       Abides by the legal and statutory rules relating to practice.
