NHS Administrative Services: Entry requirements

Job profiles for business, projects and administrative staff, incl roles for business, admin, commissioning, improvement & development, programme managers and non-clinical professional managers. Health Service Managers are responsible for the delivery and commissioning of local health care, through the management of hospital, family and community health services.

NHS Managers work in all parts of the health service: from primary care and community services to hospital trusts and mental health, in health authorities or regional/national NHS offices. Management posts may be operational or based around policy-setting, planning or strategic development.

How to become a Manager in the NHS

There are various routes to management roles within the NHS. Many graduates enter management via the NHS Management Training Scheme . This is an intensive two or three year programme that combines experience in real jobs with management education.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry criteria for applicants to the Scheme is:

A 2:2 degree in any subject

OR

A postgraduate qualification (MBA. Masters, PhD)

OR

Degree level equivalent qualifications that are health or management related to include:

  • NVQ level 5 in management
  • Diploma in Management Studies (DMS)
  • Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery or Health Visiting (Dip HE Nursing) etc
  • Diploma from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • Diploma in Speech & Language Therapy
  • Diploma from the College of Occupational Therapy (DipCOT)
  • Diploma from the College of Radiographers (DCR)
  • Diploma in Social Work (DSW) or the Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW)
