Medical and Dental: Requirements and registration

Starting a career in dentistry

Thirteen University dental schools provide the five year degree course (BDS or BChD) necessary to become a Dentist. Many further post graduate qualifications can also be obtained.

Entry Requirements:

To be accepted on to a Dental degree course you will need 3 A Levels or equivalent of which one should be in Chemistry plus 2 from Maths, Physics Biology and Zoology. Grades A or B usually required. If you do not have the relevant science subjects you may be able to gain a place on a ''Pre-Dental '' Year that is offered by some universities specifically for candidates who lack some of the relevant Science subjects.

Once qualified, dentists must register with the General Dental Council before being able to practise.
