Health Innovation Wessex (HIW) is a company limited by guarantee, owned by the NHS and University Members  hosted by University Hospital Southampton. 

Based at Southampton Science Park in Chilworth in a bright modern office easily accessible from the M3, M27 and Southampton Parkway train station, the location offers free parking with a café area and networking spaces on site. 27 acres of the Science Park site are designated a protected Conservation Area and open to staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Associate Director will have a pivotal role in developing and delivering coherent and ambitious innovation adoption programmes in partnership with local health systems, working to enable patients and staff access innovation faster. Leading a small team with associated clinical leadership support, this role will work closely with system partners (including industry partners), and other teams across HIW. 

The successful postholder will take the lead supporting an ICS locality in Wessex and will be responsible for the relationship and partnership activities to deliver an agreed delivery plan. They will also lead on a number of cross cutting themes for the organisation, and lead on certain aspects of organisational development. 

Key Responsibilities Include: 

  • Developing and delivering a strategy for assigned programmes and developing an innovation adoption strategy for Wessex
  • Leadership of business planning and delivery for the whole spectrum of HIW work on assigned programmes
  • Progress reporting to different stakeholders including partners, national commissioners (e.g. OLS and NHS England), HIW board, Wessex NHS commissioners and providers
  • Creating, developing and maintaining effective relationships with key external bodies and key stakeholders from a very wide range of backgrounds and cultures, often negotiating partnerships where there are potentially conflicting goals.
  • Identifying and delivering opportunities for HIW to diversify and expand its income sources in support of its Wessex members by understanding stakeholder needs across industry, academia, the NHS, third sector both in UK and internationally; and shape commercially attractive value propositions for specific stakeholders.

Person specification

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • Master’s degree or equivalent Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent level of knowledge and demonstrable experience
  • Management/leadership experience
  • Knowledge of the specialist work practices and/ professional guidelines relevant to the Health Innovation Wessex area
  • Knowledge and experience of the NHS and local health and social service functions
  • Evidence of continued professional development Application/Interview
Desirable criteria
  • Project Management training (e.g. PRINCE II)

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Significant senior management experience in a health or social care setting or health facing commercial company.
  • Senior experience at national/regional level involving influencing and leadership role in health sector. Good knowledge and networks at senior levels in NHS across Wessex area
  • Extensive experience of large scale organisational change and strategic change management programmes, building effective working relationships across organisational boundaries
  • Experience of interagency and partnership working with Primary and Secondary Care, Social care and voluntary sector
  • Experience of motivating and managing multiple teams, including the ability to encourage self-initiative, good practice and the timely completion of projects
  • Effective leadership and team building skills
Desirable criteria
  • Career experience in both a health and social care setting
