Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a committed, motivated and experienced registered nurse to join the dynamic and diverse stoma care team.
The applicant must have an excellent communication and interpersonal skills, experience in a surgical unit / ward, and is motivated to help the specialist team in delivering safe and quality care to people with stoma, in the hospital and in the community. 
Along with the stoma care team, you will deliver high-quality specialist ostomy care to people with stoma, or those who are about to have a stoma. You will aim to prepare the patient and their family for the upcoming surgery. You will be part of the expert team in training the patient and/or their carers in managing their stoma after the surgery, and plan for their safe discharge. You will also have an opportunity to follow their journey by seeing them in the stoma nurse-led clinic, or at their home, ensuring an optimal quality of life is restored.
As a CNS, you will also be involved in improving the service by starting or participating on quality improvement projects or research. You will also have an opportunity to educate hospital staff, students, and other groups in community about stoma care. 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist stoma care nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised stoma care to patients/clients and relatives/carers without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and in line with local and national targets 
  • The post holder will provide specialist nursing care and support and deputise for their line manager in the management of their clinical speciality. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in a variety of settings.
  • Continued development and management of nurse led clinics, telephone and email advice line.
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and to provide cover for other stoma care nurses in the trust. Act as a professional role model providing direct and indirect stoma care, teaching and research
