Job overview

An exciting opportunity has become available for an SHO Trust Practitioner at CT1 equivalent level in Urology & General Surgery. The successful candidates will do two 6 month rotation in the Urology department followed by a rotation in the Colorectal Unit of General Surgery.  The role will start on August 2025 to August 2026 on a 12th months fixed term contract.

This is an ideal post for candidates who want to gain more clinical experience before applying for further CT or ST Positions. There will also be significant opportunities to participate in research projects and undertake quality improvement initiatives, which would result in publication and presentations at national meetings.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the shared surgical SHO on call rota covering General Surgery, Urology & Trauma & Orthopaedics.

Main duties of the job

This is a CT1 equivalent level post within Urology & General Surgery at the Royal Surrey County Hospital that comprises of two 6 month rotations in Urology and Colorectal Surgery. It offers an opportunity to gain a further insight into these specialties and also provides trainees with a broader experience across other surgical sub-specialisms through participation in the surgical on call rota which also covers HPB, UGI, Colorectal, Trauma & Orthopedics and Urology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 The post has been designed to develop skills of trainees who are currently at CT1 equivalent level and looking for opportunities to further develop their skills before applying for CT or ST posts. The post will build upon skills and knowledge gained at foundation level and develop core training competencies to help prepare the trainee to enter core or specialty training. The key skills developed by the role are:

·       enhanced clinical skills, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill patients in A&E and EAU.

· developing skills for managing patients on the ward and following them through their clinical pathways

·     development and extension of surgical skills

·    developing communication skills  with patients, carers and staff members working within multi-disciplinary teams and with primary care

·  further develop a knowledge of hospital systems and  clinical governance, understanding the importance of keeping accurate records

·       developing presentation skills

·       improve competencies in  data analysis

·       provide opportunities for research, audit and service improvement

·       give further exposure and training in both Urology & General Surgery before commencement of specialty training through assistance in outpatients and theatres

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MB, BS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Primary MRCS parts A and B
  • BSc or equivalent
  • Distinction/Honours/ Prizes

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory completion of F2 year or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Active interest in audit
  • Previous experience in General Surgery
  • Previous surgical experience in Urology
