Clinical Director - Critical Care

  • Waikato Hospital - Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora
  • Permanent, full-time - Hamilton, New Zealand
  • Generous leave - CME and non-clinical time - enhanced relocation package

Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

For an accomplished senior clinician/intensivist with proven leadership experience, this is a chance to help shape the future of critical care within our rapidly expanding critical care department. Based at Waikato Hospital, a major tertiary centre, this is an exceptional opportunity to lead a team at the forefront of intensive care delivery in New Zealand.

As part of a significant transformation, our unit is undergoing growth in services and infrastructure that is laying the foundation for a future-ready, regionally connected critical care service.

About the role

As Clinical Director, you will lead a high-performing multidisciplinary team through a pivotal phase of growth. Our unit currently manages over four thousand ICU and HDU admissions annually and is accredited at C24 level by the College of Critical Care Medicine.

You'll be supported by:

  • twenty-five registrars (including six Advanced Registrars) delivering 24/7 coverage
  • a growing Fellow programme (two Fellows currently, planned to expand by three)
  • a well-established nursing team providing 24/7 oversight
  • a full-time Project Manager and Recruiter appointed to support ICU expansion.

About Waikato Hospital and the region

Waikato Hospital is a 722-bed tertiary referral and teaching hospital, serving as the regional hub for the Midland area, which covers Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairāwhiti, and Taranaki regions.

We provide a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties, including:

  • cardiac and neurosurgery (we are home to NZ's second largest cardiac surgery centre)
  • regional paediatric services
  • accredited Trauma Centre and Regional Burns Unit within the National Burns Service
  • advanced diagnostics and treatment facilities
  • teaching affiliations with the University of Auckland, University of Waikato, and Wintec.

Living in Hamilton

Hamilton is a vibrant, centrally located city nestled on the Waikato River, offering the best of both urban life and outdoor adventure. From surfing in Raglan (thirty minutes away) to skiing on Mt Ruapehu, world-class fishing, hiking, and more, you can enjoy a career in one of New Zealand's busiest ICUs and a lifestyle that's second to none.

The city also boasts excellent schools, a thriving food and arts scene, and major events like the National Agricultural Fieldays and Balloons Over Waikato.

About you

You are a senior clinician with:

  • eligibility for specialist registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in a Critical Care Vocational scope of practice
  • a collaborative, future-focused approach to leadership
  • experience managing and developing multidisciplinary teams.

You'll work in close partnership with clinical and operational leaders to ensure the delivery of high-quality, equitable care across the region, and the ongoing development of the Critical Care Department.
