Main duties of the job
This is a fixed term 1 year post jointly funded by UHS and the NIHR CRN. The post will provide unrivalled exposure to clinical neurosurgery and at the same time training in the management and conduct of clinical research. The post is part of the established neurosurgery research programme at the Wessex Neurological Centre. The team currently is one of the highest recruiting teams nationally in neurological disorders and is focussed on haemorrhagic stroke and traumatic brain injury. The successful candidate will be expected to manage and support a large team of research nurses and clinical trial assistants to deliver recruitment to academic and commercial studies on the NIHR portfolio currently being run in the unit.
This is an opportunity for extensive exposure to all aspects of clinical research ranging from trial design, set up and recruitment, to data collection and analysis. They will be part of a team of 4 research fellows working different aspects of neurovascular disorders and they will gain further support from the wider body of research fellows in the Trust. As part of this they will participate in the Wessex Clinical Research Network Clinical Research Fellows training programme and statistics courses and receive certification of this.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• GMC registration with a licence to practise.
• Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems (A & I)
• 4 months training in Neurosurgery, neurology or neuro intensive care
• Successful completion of a Foundation Programme
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.
Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)
Basic Salary – MT03 £49,909
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate – MRCS or equivalent BSc (or other intercalated degree) other higher degrees (eg. PhD)
- Undergraduate Awards
- Course in medical statistics

Essential criteria

- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
