Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join the team at the Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) as a Clinical Trials Assistant – CTA

CARU specializes in neurodegenerative diseases in particular Parkinson’s Disease and works closely with the mitochondrial and ageing research teams. We also work closely with Cumbria Northumberland Tyne & Wear (CNTW) to deliver Dementia studies. 

This role will focus on Parkinsons research and requires an individual with excellent organizational and communication skills, effective time management, basic IT skills, knowledge of data collection systems and the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.

Clinical experience and skills such as venepuncture will be desirable but training will be provided to the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will work as an integral member of the CARU research delivery team to provide clinical care to study participants and their families who are participating in research.

This is a Trust wide post.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to:

Fulfil the role of a CTA as per job description.

Support the delivery of clinical trials whilst maintaining a high standard of care and have the skills such as venepuncture, cannulation, ECG – or be willing to obtain these skills – required for these studies.

Ensure compliance with NUTH policies and procedures and adhere to Clinical Governance framework.

Enter study information into appropriate data systems – paper/electronic.

Liaise with the study admin team and study sponsors to ensure accurate data is collected.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Coordinate and improve trial communication throughout Multi-Disciplinary Teams throughout the Trust
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professional to ensure service delivery
  • Communicates effectively with research team and study participants and their family members. Is able to provide patients with information, which may be complex or sensitive, regarding their participation in the clinical trial and the care that they
    will receive as a consequence of that
  •  Facilitate the recruitment of research participants in to low risk research studies, which is likely to include quality of life and tissue sample collection studies
  • Support the research delivery team to successfully deliver a broad ranging portfolio of clinical trials
  • Coordinate and supervise housekeeping duties and ordering of all clinical trial supplies
  • Co-ordinate the collection transfer and storage of blood / tissue samples in accordance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 as required by trial protocol

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 4 or equivalent qualification or NVQ level 3 and an ability to demonstrate significant experience relevant to role

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of caring for patients in a professional setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of the Trust’s confidentiality procedures (Data Protection Act, Caldicott guidelines)
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of any education related training programs pertaining to clinical trials
  • Experience of using NHS patient management systems
  • Knowledge regarding the mandatory standard regarding conduction/construction of clinical trials (to include ICH GCP, UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research etc.)

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to coordinate collection of data to agreed timescales
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate well (written and verbally)
  • Strong IT skills, specifically in database management and microsoft excel
Desirable criteria
  • Venepuncture skills
