Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated stroke team as a specialty doctor.  This is a great opportunity for someone who would like to work in a research-active comprehensive stroke service with advanced neuroimaging capabilities.

This is a new post to join a team of existing 6 substantive consultants with varying clinical input into stroke. We are one of the 11 prestigious hyperacute stroke research centres in the country and have been the lead recruiter in complex clinical trials for a number of years. 

Successful candidates should have significant prior experience in the management of hyperacute stroke presentations as well as in ongoing care / rehabilitation for this group of patients. Skills should include management of acutely unwell patients, independent decision –making on reperfusion treatments and clinical correlation with advanced brain / vascular imaging. The post holder would be expected to manage in and out of hours clinical work without direct supervision from consultant team.

Main duties of the job

This job is being advertised to help development of sustainable cross-site working, between the stroke service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and the tertiary service at Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust. You will be supported by Trust Executives’ Board of both Trusts as well as the medical directorate to achieve service goals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical
•    You will be expected to deliver hyperacute stroke care including systemic thrombolysis, triage of patients for complex interventions including regional referrals for mechanical thrombectomy and Hemicraniectomy. 
•    You will be expected to cover stroke rehabilitation patients at QEH site.
•    You will be expected to participate in Neuroradiolgy and Vascular MDT meetings on a rotational basis 
•    You will be expected to support outpatient service (Stroke clinic / TIA clinic) in one of the sites 

Administrative
•    To help enhance integration of Gateshead stroke services with Newcastle upon Tyne tertiary stroke services.
•    Participate in departmental quality and safety meetings 

Research
•    Participate in ongoing clinical research trials at Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust.
•    Help achieving timely recruitment in NIHR portfolio trials.
•    You will be working in the top performing hyperacute stroke research centre in the country and will be expected to help enhance integration of stroke research into clinical practice at both base units

Teaching
•    To participate in training and education for stroke specialist nursing staff 
•    Clinical supervision of resident doctors 
•    Participate in departmental and directorate education activities  

Person specification

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • At least four years’ postgraduate training, at least two years of which is in a relevant specialty
  • Full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • Special skills training in the specialty

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in the specialty
  • Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty
  • Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality
  • Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty
  • Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals
  • Evidence of leadership / project management
  • Evidence of having implemented change
  • Experience in developing and implementing new technologies

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff
  • Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education

Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings
  • Research/critical review of literature
  • Publications in the last five years
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree

Audit

  • Evidence of participation in audit
