Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly, dynamic, innovative Surgical Pharmacy team dedicated to providing high quality ward based clinical pharmacy services.
We are looking for someone with passion in this area of work in hospital pharmacy. You must be an enthusiastic, motivated and a patient focused pharmacy technician dedicated to patient safety. You will work with the Surgical Pharmacy team to help implement, deliver and continually improve the medicines management to surgical wards and allied areas. You will need to have excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team. You will be a pharmacy technician registered (or undergoing registration) with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Typical surgical specialties you will see include: General (gastrointestinal), Bariatric, Vascular, Plastics, Orthopaedics, Major Trauma, Elderly surgical rehabilitation and Neurosurgery.
This is a full time post and the post holder will be required to participate in the weekend working and late duties as per rota.

Main duties of the job
- To assist the Senior Lead Pharmacist, Surgery in promoting and developing medicines management initiatives within the surgical directorates.
- To provide high quality, patient-focused medicines management services to adult surgical ward areas in line with departmental procedures.
- The post holder will support the continuing drive to improve cost-effective medicines use and medicines safety within the Trust.
- To train staff on medicines management issues where appropriate.

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (pharmacy technician) or in the process of registration
- HEE Medicines Optimisation Programme (MOP) or equivalent qualification (or will undergo the ICHNT in-house Ward Skills Training)
- ACPT Accreditation required or will undergo CPPE ACPT course
Desirable criteria
- Short courses relevant to practice, to include supervisory qualification such as Personal Supervisor (PS) training
- Recognised Medicines Management qualification (Certificate of Medicines Management for Pharmacy technicians - CMMPT or equivalent)
- Educational Supervisor or NVQ assessor to A1 standard or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 1 year experience of working in a UK hospital pharmacy and at least 3 months of ward- based experience
Desirable criteria
- Significant MMPT work experience in a UK hospital
- Practical experience with an electronic in-patient prescribing system
- Experience of training of pharmacy, nursing or medical staff
- Experience working as a Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician (including medication history taking, reuse of patient’s own medicines, ordering medicines, patient consultations, discharge services and self-administration) in a busy clinical environment
Skills/knowledge/ abilities
Essential criteria
- Able to analyse and interpret information relating to medicines and their uses
- Excellent verbal communication skills with staff and patients
- Ability to identify the scope of a problem, consider options for solution, select solution and review outcomes; knows when and will seek support where appropriate
- Ability to recognise own limitations
Desirable criteria
- Leadership and delegation skills
- Ability to use appropriate techniques in delivering training
- Good working knowledge of MS (Microsoft) applications (Word/Excel/Power point/Teams and Outlook)
