Job overview

We’re looking for a motivated Senior MR Physicist to join our growing team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, delivering expert scientific, safety, and research support across acute hospitals, Community Diagnostic Centres and private providers.

In this role you will:

  • Provide MR physics and safety expertise across a varied 1.5T & 3T fleet (Philips, Siemens, GE).
  • Collaborate with radiographers, radiologists, clinicians, and industry partners to keep services safe and cutting edge.
  • Train the next generation of MRI physicists through the Scientist Training Programme.
  • Contribute to clinical service innovation and translational research.
  • Develop your own areas of interest, with support for professional growth.

Main duties of the job

  • This post provides support for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) in the Trust and for external Service Level Agreement (SLA) customers. This is carried out for the Radiological Sciences Unit (RSU) which is part of the Imaging Department of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT), on Trust sites as well as those covered in our SLAs. Trust sites include Charing Cross Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and Community Diagnostic Centres. SLA sites are mostly within the south east with some further afield.
  • The role will include clinical development, research, teaching and training, quality assurance, trouble-shooting and MR safety work on a range of manufacturer’s equipment and with whole body applications
  • The post requires a highly specialist knowledge of the scientific, technical, and safety aspects of MRI/MRS and their clinical applications. The post holder must be able to act on their own initiative to develop scientific and technical solutions to meet the diverse requirements of a constantly evolving, specialist MR service.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Honours degree in a relevant subject
  • Relevant MSc or equivalent
  • State registration as a Clinical Scientist or ability to achieve within a reasonable timescale
Desirable criteria
  • 1st or 2nd class honours degree
  • Successful completion of Scientist Training Programme in Medical Physics, or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in application of MR physics in a clinical environment
  • Specialist experience in MR systems, image acquisition and image processing
  • Experience in giving responsible MR safety advice
  • Practical experience on a range of MR equipment
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching at postgraduate level
  • Previous involvement in research and development activities

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge and understanding of regulations, recommendations and guidelines.
  • Self-motivated/ability for problem solving and decision making
  • Good computer skills with Microsoft Office specifically Word & Excel)
  • Experience of computer programming e.g. Matlab, IDL, python.
Desirable criteria
  • Pulse sequence programming
