Who Are We Looking For?

Memorial Houston Medical is seeking an enthusiastic, passionate, and collaborative Band 7 Unit Manager to join our team. This position offers a competitive salary, determined by experience and qualifications. Candidates must have availability from Monday to Sunday and be willing to work a variety of shifts, including 12-hour long days, nights, weekends, and potentially shorter shifts as service requirements dictate.

 

Role Overview

The Unit Manager will be responsible for both clinical work and day-to-day management of the unit. Key duties include:

·       Assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care for patients requiring level 2 and 3 care

·       Delivering both general and specialised direct nursing care in accordance with organisational policies, procedures, and protocols

·       Management of the unit clinical staff

·       Promoting staff well-being and supporting ongoing professional development.

·       Ensuring patient safety and delivering excellent care

Main Duties

·       Oversee care for critical care patients and the unit environment

·       Manage daily operations and sickness absence within the unit

·       Support staff continuing professional development (CPD) and learning

·       Deliver direct nursing care for patients needing level 2 and 3 support

·       Prioritise nursing interventions, escalate concerns of patient deterioration to senior clinicians

·       Coordinate among disciplines to ensure seamless patient care

·       Conduct patient assessments to maintain harm-free care

·       Lead quality improvement projects specific to the unit

·       Create and maintain local policies and guidelines

 

Candidate Requirements

·       Relevant leadership and management experience

·       Extensive background in ICU or an Acute nursing setting

·       Essential (First Level) diploma or degree preferred; MSc valuable but not mandatory

·       Current Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) registration, with no practice restrictions

·       Openness to self-directed learning and commitment to maintaining registration and knowledge

·       Proven experience managing high-acuity, critically ill adults in a hospital setting

·       Experience with invasive lines, mechanical ventilation, haemodialysis (continuous/intermittent), and vasoactive intravenous medications

·       Broad experience in critical care specialties, including cardiac and cardiothoracic care, neurosurgery, renal, oncology, orthopaedic, and gastrointestinal surgery

·       Completion of a 60-credit Adult Critical Care/Intensive Care Course or equivalent, as well as the Step 1 Critical Care Competencies Course
