Specialist Physiotherapist – Vascular and Amputees

Band 6

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) is a regional centre of excellence, providing all major arterial surgery for Wessex. We are looking for a part-time (26.25 hrs per week) Specialist Physiotherapist, experienced in working with vascular and amputee patients, to work alongside the existing Occupational and Physiotherapists, giving this cohort of patient’s high quality therapy treatment, as well as supporting the team.

The post is focused on delivering person-centred care across a 7-day service, through enhancing function and quality of life. This includes supporting vascular patients on the acute wards, pre- and post-operatively, including working in our Therapy Out-patient gym. This is the perfect opportunity to utilise your clinical, managerial and leadership skills.

This post is part of the wider Therapy services department. You will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 300 Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff, so you will have peer support available to you from the wider team.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for a highly experienced, motivated, and pro-active Physiotherapist to work in a small and dedicated, friendly MDT.

Job Role and Responsibilities:
Our vascular patients often have multiple pathologies, and complex social situations. UHS is a fast-paced acute environment where effective communication, prioritisation, and teamwork are essential. Our focus is early assessment and complex discharge planning, with follow up in our Therapy Out-patient setting for those undergoing prosthetic rehab. You will be working as part of a small team of OTs and Physios, as well as a team of therapy support staff. We also support student therapists all year round.

To maintain patient flow through our hospital we run our therapy services across 7-days, including weekends and Bank holidays, on a rota basis, so flexible working is required from all staff.

Please read the job description and person specification, to ensure you meet all criteria before applying.

The specific experience and skills we also need for this clinical post are:
•    Proven experience working with vascular and amputee patients (ideally in an acute hospital   setting), with broader experience in areas that support this complex caseload, such as orthopaedics, respiratory care or neurology.
•    Understanding and knowledge of complex equipment, including wheelchairs
•    Evidence of providing teaching to wider MDT, therapy teams and students
•    Clear, expressed desire in your application form to work at UHS and in this specific clinical area

Please note:
•    The interview date is Wednesday 24th September
•    This post is for 26.25 hours per week
•    We do not accept CV applications

If you feel you meet all these criteria and want to know more, please email [email protected] or [email protected] or phone 02380777222 bleep 1196. We are happy to answer any questions you might have.

If this post is not for you and you are interested in other therapy opportunities, please e-mail: [email protected]
