Senior Clinical Fellow POCUS and Intensive Care Medicine
ST3+
Job overview
Senior Clinical Fellow – Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and Intensive Care Medicine starting Feb 2026
Clinical fellow post is available from February 2026 for an initial period of six months, renewable by mutual agreement, Applicants can be trainees in anaesthetics or intensive care medicine, an acute medicine specialty or emergency medicine (A&E), anaesthetics or intensive care medicine; they must have experience of intensive care medicine and preferably have airway skills. They should possess MRCP, FRCA or MCEM as appropriate to their background.
This post, one of the first of its kind nationally, involves both clinical commitments on our intensive care unit (ICU) and a substantial commitment to acute point of care imaging. This is an exceptional opportunity to spend time with two of the country’s most successful point of care ultrasound trainers, to learn from them and gain accreditations relevant to training and spend time with a radiologist highly experienced in teaching ultrasound.
Main duties of the job
The Intensive Care Unit currently consists of up to 10 level three and 12 level two beds split between two areas, one of which is a new, state of the art, purpose built extension including 8 level two bed spaces and 4 positive pressure lobby isolation rooms. Over 1400 patients are admitted annually with around 50% coming from surgical specialties. The Intensive Care Unit (together with the anaesthetic department) has become well known for using Enhanced Recovery and Goal Directed Fluid Therapy for major surgical cases. This has been particularly effective for the hepatobiliary and oesophagogastric patients. The hospital attracts many tertiary referral cases relating to hepatobiliary, oesophagogastric and robotic urological surgery. In particular specialist expertise has been developed in the management of severe acute pancreatitis, small liver/ hepatic failure in both surgical and medical patients and perforated oesophagus. It also serves a busy and interesting acute medical take and as such has a wide variety of medical admissions.
Critical care has a highly effective and successful Outreach service which the successful applicant will also gain valuable experience by being part of. A wide experience of patient management, practical interventions and both bedside and formal teaching are offered. Consultant supervision is available on a 24-hour basis from Consultant Intensivists.
