Consultant Psychiatrist - CAU & Police Pathways Service

Consultant

Job overview

Location: Crisis Assessment Unit & Police Pathways Service (S136 Suite & Street Triage), Becklin Centre, Leeds
Contract: Permanent (Fixed-term 12-month applications also welcome)

Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a passionate and committed Consultant Psychiatrist to work within our Crisis Resolution Intensive Support Service (CRISS). This post offers a chance to make a real difference in the lives of working-age adults experiencing acute mental health challenges.

About the Role
The post holder will work alongside three Consultant Psychiatrists as part of the CRISS Team. While contributing to the overall clinical leadership of the wider Crisis Resolution and Intensive Support Service (CRISS), the primary focus of the role will be on providing medical leadership and input to the CAU and Police Pathways services located at the Becklin Centre.

Main duties of the job

The CAU and Police Pathways Service arm of Crisis Resolution and Intensive Support Service provides Section 136 assessments, brief CAU admissions and the support of the Street Triage Team. Community crisis assessments and home-based treatment are provided through the 3 CRISS localities (East, South and West) of the wider CRISS service. The successful applicant will be based at the Becklin Centre, with the majority of their clinical work delivered from this hub alongside colleagues in the Crisis Assessment Unit (CAU), Section 136 Suite, and Street Triage teams.

CRISS became operational in March 2019 and was further enhanced by a significant redesign project, with the new model launching in November 2024. This innovative service adheres to the Core Fidelity Standards for Crisis Resolution services, developed by University College London and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. CRISS provides rapid assessment and intensive support for adults with acute mental health issues, emphasising recovery-focused holistic care.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a consultant psychiatrist to be part of a forward thinking team in a service that truly makes a difference. We are looking for individuals who share our ambition to provide exceptional mental health services and are committed to delivering outstanding patient care.

The CRISS is made up of the three CRISS localities (East, West and South) and the Crisis Assessment Unit (CAU) / s136 component based at the Becklin Centre. The s136 suite (currently 4 bedded) and 6 bedded mixed Crisis Assessment Unit (CAU) are also based at The Becklin Centre alongside the acute wards – 2 male and 2 female. There is a further male ward and 10 bedded PICU at the Newsam Centre.

The CAU is designed for brief admissions (up to approx. 7 days) and is closely linked to the CRISS as one of the main points of referral into and transfer from. There is an expectation that the CRISS team will liaise closely with the CAU to ensure timely entry and exit from these beds.  Additionally, the Leeds OASIS provides a new option within the existing LYPFT crisis pathway, offering an alternative to hospital admission for those that do not necessarily need a bed on an acute ward and for whom a homely environment may be more beneficial.
