A part time opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join the Dietetics Department at The Royal Surrey Hospital as a Dietetic Assistant to support our Hepatopancreatico-biliary (HPB) and Oncology dietetic teams and work as part of our growing team Dietetic Assistant team.
We are looking for somebody with good communication skills who has experience of dealing with the general public and an appreciation for the challenges associated with surgery and / or living with cancer. The post holder will support the dietitians with the day-to-day care of both inpatients and outpatients referred to our service. This is a busy varied role, which includes mainly service related patient administration and telephone duties as well as some face-to-face contact with patients. This role will also be responsible for organising the bookings for patient information sessions. We will require you to be organised, be able to work under pressure, be able to work under your own initiative as well as part of a team. Being computer literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook are essential and a priority for this role. We are also looking for someone who takes a pride in delivering excellent customer services.
You will join a forward thinking dietetic team that focuses on research and audit in its areas of activity to promote clinical effectiveness in patient care. 

Main duties of the job

To assist the hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) surgical and Oncology dietetic teams to provide a high quality service to inpatients and outpatients at the Royal Surrey County Hospital by undertaking tasks which do not require the expertise of a registered dietitian.

The dietetic assistant will work as part of a team sharing responsibility for the smooth running of the HPB and Oncology dietetic service in line with Trust performance targets. This post will support the HPB and Oncology dietetic teams with the day-to-day care of both inpatients and outpatients attending The Royal Surrey County Hospital. A considerate, patient focused service will be provided in all dealings with patients and with staff around the hospital and throughout the whole system.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

•    To complement the work of the registered dietitians by undertaking basic dietetic reviews (with supervision) with both in and outpatients including telephone reviews.  
•    To work with the dietitians to set up and assist with information sessions for patients.
•    To collect clinical and non-clinical information from medical records as required by the dietitians. 
•    To coordinate out-patient referrals and ensure the relevant information is saved as an electronic patient record – i.e. enter patient information, reason for referral and then book patients into the appropriate clinics.
•    To send nutritional supplement samples to patients and liaise regarding preferences either in outpatient settings or by telephone. 
•    To carry out anthropometric measurements (body weight, hand grip strength and mid upper arm muscle measurements) in clinic and inpatient settings
•    To document encounters with patients on their electronic patient record
•    Seek advice from the HPB and Oncology dietetic teams when:
o    Patients have questions that are beyond the scope of the dietetic assistant role
o    Progression of treatment is required
o    Deterioration in patients’ condition has occurred 
•    To participate in dietetic service meetings, department meetings, MDT meetings, care planning meetings as required.

Essential criteria
  • Good general standard of education to GCSE level or equivalent including English and Maths (Grade 4 / C and above)
  • Working knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel, web based programs and electronic systems
