Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Substantive Consultant Urological Surgeon with subspecialist interest in Prostate Cancer to join our dynamic and internationally renowned Urology Department. This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK’s leading AHSC where clinical excellence, cutting-edge research, and education converge to deliver world-class patient care. 

The successful candidate will be based primarily at Charing Cross Hospital, with responsibilities across other Imperial sites including St Mary’s and Hammersmith Hospitals. You will join a team of 14 consultants and a multidisciplinary group of specialists, fellows, and nurse practitioners, contributing to a department that performs over 5,000 surgical procedures and sees 26,000 outpatients annually. 

This post is ideal for a highly skilled surgeon with expertise in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy and/or focal therapy, and a strong interest in advancing independent practice in these areas. You will play a pivotal role in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, working within the RAPID pathway, a pioneering diagnostic model developed at Imperial. 

ICHNT is a regional Urological Cancer Centre, hosting the North West London Urological Cancer Specialist MDT and serving as a supra-regional centre for testicular cancer. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

·       Deliver high-quality care in general urology, prostate cancer, and benign prostate disease.

·       Maintain competencies and ensure prompt attendance at clinical activities.

·       Engage patients in shared decision-making and uphold the Trust’s values of kindness, expertise, collaboration, and aspiration.

Research and Teaching

·       Contribute to Imperial’s research mission, with access to funding from NIHR, BRC, and other bodies.

·       Provide teaching and mentorship to medical students and junior doctors.

·       Participate in educational SPA activities and departmental teaching programmes.

Performance and Governance

·       Drive improvements in clinical efficiency, quality outcomes, and operational performance.

·       Support junior doctor compliance with EWTD and New Deal.

·       Participate in recruitment, appraisal, and team objective setting.

Strategic and Leadership Duties

·       Represent the Trust in clinical networks and external meetings.

·       Lead specialty meetings and resolve conflicts constructively.

·       Collaborate with Imperial College London and other stakeholders.

Job Plan Summary

·       10 Programmed Activities (PAs): 8.5 DCC, 1.5 SPA

·       Activities include theatre lists, outpatient clinics, MDT meetings, and surveillance clinics.

On-call duties include daily ward rounds and emergency cover across Imperial sites.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC’s register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
  • On GMC’s Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
  • Appropriate Royal College Membership

Knowledge/ Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable evidence of training and expertise in general adult and paediatric urological surgery.
  • Significant experience in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment (including operative experience in robotic assisted radical prostatectomy and / or focal therapy)
  • Ability to undertake General Urology on-call, including supporting the major trauma centre at SMH.
  • Clinical judgment. Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
  • Evidence of accuracy, care and timely recording of all necessary clinical data, both written and electronic.

Leadership / management skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
  • Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Management of staff

Teaching/ Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates / postgraduates and junior medical staff
