You’ll be joining the Wessex Neurological Centre, a nationally renowned specialist service based at University Hospital Southampton. We provide comprehensive neurosurgical care for a population of over 3 million people across central southern England. Our service operates 24/7 and includes over 60 dedicated inpatient beds, specialist outpatient clinics, and state-of-the-art theatres. We’re proud to be one of only two major trauma centres in the South of England, offering a full spectrum of emergency and elective neurosurgical services.

As part of our Pituitary and Skull Base subspecialty team, you’ll work alongside highly skilled neurosurgeons, endocrinologists, neuroradiologists, and ENT surgeons in regular MDT meetings, with strong links to research and teaching through the University of Southampton. Our centre is recognised for clinical excellence, innovative research, and high patient outcomes, consistently ranking among the UK’s top recruiters to neurosurgical clinical trials. Job Description & Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll take a lead in both elective and emergency neurosurgical care, specialising in Pituitary and Skull Base surgery. You’ll have a balanced mix of clinical, teaching, research, and leadership responsibilities, working within a highly skilled multidisciplinary team at one of the UK’s leading neurological centres. Key elements of the role include:

· Delivering expert care for adult neurosurgical patients, including a 1:10 on-call commitment for adult cranial surgery.

· Leading and participating in Pituitary and Skull Base MDT meetings, clinics, and surgical sessions.

· Driving education and training for undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff, helping shape the next generation of neurosurgeons.

· Contributing to clinical research and audit, including opportunities to be involved with national studies.

Skills & Experience

To thrive in this role, you’ll need to bring:

· Full GMC registration with a licence to practise and specialist registration (or be within 6 months of completion).

· Extensive experience in Pituitary and Skull Base neurosurgery, with evidence of independent operating skills.

· A strong track record in research, publications, or clinical trials in your field.

· Commitment to teaching, training, and mentoring medical students, trainees, and other clinical staff.

Other Key Information

· Residence within 10 miles or 30 minutes of Southampton General Hospital (or Trust-approved alternative) is required for on-call commitments.

· This role involves participation in regular MDT meetings, consultant meetings, and departmental leadership activities.

· The post requires an enhanced DBS check, as standard for all clinical roles.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in general emergency neurosurgery
  • >/= 12/12 post-CCT Fellowship in Pituitary / Skull Base neurosurgery
  • High level of experience in complex Pituitary and Skull Base surgery
Meini prawf dymunol
  • MSc or equivalent in Research
  • In date GCP training certificate
  • Course on leading techniques in Skull Base surgery
  • Course on leading techniques in Pituitary surgery
  • RCS(England) approved fellowship
  • Supervising research by junior staff
  • Evidence of service improvement
  • Consultant level experience in Pituitary / Skull Base neurosurgery
  • Consultant experience of adult on-call
  • Consultant level experience of leading independent complex anterior Skull Base surgery including joint ENT operations
