 An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Speech and Language therapist in our community team for adults with learning disabilities.

We are looking for a professional with leadership skills and a passion to be part of the Speech and Language therapy service as a B5 part time post for a fixed term of 12 months. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivery of a highly specialist service, under the direction of the senior SLT demonstrating evolving expertise and specialist skills in areas such as Dysphagia and Communication.

 This is a  part time  B5 SLT role, offered as a Fixed term contract for 12 months

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will independently manage a caseload of Dysphagia for people with learning disabilities and their communication needs.

They will maintain a high standard of clinical work and offer a person-centred approach to client assessment and intervention by using appropriate treatment procedures and following established standards as guided by the Senior SLT in the team They might also be expected to take part or initiate appropriate quality measures, research or clinical studies that can improve the service and the experience of the service users. 

They will be expected to work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team, service users, carers, and other local services.

 The post holder also is required to deliver formal and informal training to staff and carers and participate in regular team meetings, and clinical supervision. They will be flexible, have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to reflect on their own practice. They will show respect and compassion for people with learning disabilities, and their families

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • • First degree and Licence to Practice from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Working collaboratively within multidisciplinary settings
  • • Experience of making communication resources
  • • Experience of working with people with a wide range of communication difficulties – adult or children
  • • Experience working with tertiary or voluntary community-based services
  • • Experience working with clients from diverse cultures.

Skills & Knowledge

  • • Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act and Safeguarding processes.
  • • Basic knowledge of the developmental stages of language development.
  • • Basic knowledge of dysphagia and its impact
  • • Basic knowledge of common medical conditions and a basic understanding of their impact on functional ability (communication and eating and drinking).
  • • Knowledge of RCSLT position paper on LD and it’s impact on SLT
  • • An ability to use clinical and ethical reasoning skills to analyse and interpret assessment findings, plan and evaluate intervention programme
