A great opportunity has arisen for any midwife who wishes to be part of credible dedicated High Dependency Team at Queen Charlotte's Hospital.
It has an excellent maternal medicine service taking referrals from across the region and subsequently many women with highly complicated pregnancies will require their care to be within a dedicated High Dependency.
The unit is operational within the delivery suite provides care for women at Level 1, 2 and 3. We frequently carry out invasive monitoring and are also one of the very few obstetric high dependency units that provide respiratory support by means of Optiflo and CPAP.
This is an excellent opportunity for midwives who are enthusiastic, motivated and interested in this area of midwifery and wish to enhance their skills and knowledge to provide higher levels of care to sick obstetric women.
You will be working in a friendly and supportive environment with the opportunity for further education.
Support and training will be provided in the form of study days, one to one teaching and in-house workshops by a multi-disciplinary team and lead midwife for HDU.
Midwives must have enthusiasm and interest in this area of midwifery and have had experience in caring for the sick obstetric woman or the critically ill adult patient. Midwives should be willing to undertake further study where applicable as well as being flexible with their rota.

- As the midwife for Obstetric HDU, work in partnership with women/birthing people, plan and implement individualised midwifery-led care packages, continually assessing, analysing and determining appropriate courses of action.
- Assist in diagnosing, co-ordinating and managing a woman’s care in collaboration with obstetrician ensuring the women/birthing people remain the centre of all decision making, promoting informed choice and respecting her preferences, dignity and cultural values
- Using specialist expert knowledge, experience and practice, continually update and develop advanced midwifery practices and skills to provide and perform accurate midwifery assessments and procedures. undertake and interpret enhanced maternal and fetal observations using appropriate tools.
- The post holder will also have specialist knowledge in the comprehensive physiological assessment, and understand the physiological changes in pregnancy and how that effects the disease process.
- The post holder will be able to interpret blood result and ABG’s and escalate when necessary and undertake basic cardiac and invasive monitoring and interpretation.
