Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Pharmacy Assistant to join our well-established pharmacy team. We are looking for Maternity cover for a fixed 12 month period.
In this varied role, you will be helping to deliver a high quality pharmacy service to our patients by rotating through the following areas of the pharmacy department:
The inpatient dispensary
Stores and distribution services
Ward based medicines management services
Ideally, you should have an NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent with significant hospital pharmacy experience. If not we will support you to complete the dispensary assistant module within the 12 months

Main duties of the job
The Pharmacy Department provides pharmaceutical services to all wards and departments within the Royal Surrey, including the St Luke’s cancer centre and the paediatric unit. It also provides a service to external hospitals and clinics include Milford, Haslemere and Cranleigh Hospitals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Rotational post where the post holder will work within the inpatient dispensary, stores and distribution and medicines management services.
• Accurately dispense and deliver pharmaceuticals to patients from the inpatient dispensary, including cytotoxic medicines, high risk drugs and controlled drugs to all wards and departments at RSFT (including external hospitals and clinics such as Milford Hospital, Haslemere Hospital and Cranleigh Hospital.)
• Participate in the distribution service for stock drugs and vaccines to wards and departments
• Provide a top-up service to allocated wards on a weekly basis and provide cover to other wards when needed.
• Assist with the receipt and storage of goods, including parenteral nutrition and controlled drugs
• Assist with the daily distribution and archiving of worksheets and picking notes.
• Assist with the daily stock take and expiry checking of drugs and disposables.
• Securely deliver medicines, including controlled drugs to wards and departments.
• Assist with the ordering, receiving and distribution of IV and bulk fluids.
• Assist in the daily stock take of drugs and disposables.
• Work in conjunction with the clinical pharmacy team to provide a safe and efficient near-patient pharmacy services based at ward level.
• Participate in the training of new staff, including, Pharmacists Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants, Trainee Pharmacists, Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians and staff from primary care, as appropriate
• To assist in the supervision of the daily workload of other Pharmacy Assistants and trainee staff.
• To act as a role model to junior staff.
• Be adaptable to the ever changing work demands of a busy pharmacy and ward setting.
• Be able to adjust and co-ordinate the work priorities appropriately within the team.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE Maths and English (Grade A to C) or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
- Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) level 2 or Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level 5 in pharmacy (accredited by the GPhC) or equivalent
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Stores and distribution experience
- Dispensary experience including answering queries and progress chasing
- Customer service experience and task related problem solving
Desirable criteria
- Previous work in stock control
- Hospital pharmacy work experience including knowledge of how to deal with work related non-routine activities
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
