Job overview

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT) is looking for a motivated and experienced Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) who exemplifies our Trust values to join the Adult Acute SLT team on our Hammersmith hospital site for a fixed term period. The site team is 3.0wte (Band 8a, Band 7 and Band 6) and the post holder will join our wider SLT service of over 30wte SLTs working across the Trust. 

The post-holder will provide a specialist clinical SLT service to adult inpatients with communication and/or swallowing disorders resulting from acquired neurological, medical and surgical conditions of an acute or chronic nature. 

Hammersmith Hospital is a specialist hospital offering a range of services including renal, haematology, cancer (including upper GI), critical care and cardiology/cardiothoracic. 

The successful candidate will need to be flexible and adaptable as they may be required to provide cross site cover. Significant clinical experience in acute settings is essential, as well as the ability to influence, inspire and build relationships across disciplines.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will deliver a high quality, evidence-based responsive service and will be expected to support junior colleagues and work as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary team providing assessment and management plans to adult acute inpatients. They will also be expected to participate in service improvement projects including MDT training programmes. 
  • The post-holder will be supported by the Adult SLT Clinical Lead for the HH site, and will work closely and collaboratively with other adult SLTs and teams across the organisation which includes Adult Acute at St Mary's Hospital (SMH) and Adult Acute, Stroke & Neuro-rehab, Head & Neck, Voice and Laryngology/Airways teams based at Charing Cross Hospital (CXH).   The SLT service receives academic support from the Clinical Academic SLT. You will work alongside your site-based therapy and wider MDT colleagues, and collaborate with community partners.

Education/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy
  • State registration with the Health Professions Council
  • Evidence of CPD through maintenance of a portfolio, especially in the relevant clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Professional Organisation
  • Membership of Professional special interest groups relevant to speciality
  • Relevant Postgraduate clinical qualification
  • Management skills or leadership training
  • Clinical Educators course or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant recent clinical experience in acute hospital setting at Band 6 or above
  • Evidence of a broad base of clinical experience at Band 6 level or equivalent
  • Experience of working in the NHS showing knowledge and understanding of recent NHS developments and their impact on service provision
  • Significant experience of working as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team and inter-agency working
  • Experience of multidisciplinary goal planning, development of care pathways and using outcome measures
  • Experience of organising and implementing training programmes for therapists, MDT members, support workers, students and apprentices
  • Experience of service development/change management
  • Experience in implementing evidence based practice in speciality
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Band 7 or equivalent experience in relevant post
  • Leadership of a therapy team
  • Recent, relevant work in an NHS environment
  • Experience of using clinical governance framework to monitor and improve quality of patient care
  • Clinical research experience
  • Experience of planning and managing service improvement activities

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced skills in the appropriate application of a range of techniques and approaches to the management of relevant conditions
  • Competent IT skills
  • Skills in supervision, mentoring and coaching
Desirable criteria
  • Competency in Videofluoroscopy
  • Level 2A or above FEES competency
  • Competency in managing tracheostomised patients
  • Knowledge of recent NHS developments and their impact on service provision
