About the roles

Exciting opportunities are available for qualified Ophthalmologists (Senior Medical Officers) who want to make a positive impact while working in a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and supportive team. provide high-quality diagnosis, treatment, and surgical intervention for patients with a wide range of ocular conditions. Working in well-resourced and supportive multidisciplinary teams, you’ll deliver outpatient and theatre services while contributing to teaching, quality improvement, and service development. 

Depending on the specific position, responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

·       Surgical procedures: Performing cataract, corneal, glaucoma, retinal, and oculoplastic surgeries, including laser and minimally invasive techniques

·       Emergency and trauma care: Assessing and managing urgent eye conditions such as ocular trauma, retinal detachments, acute infections, and sudden vision loss

·       Postoperative care: Monitoring recovery, managing complications, and coordinating follow-up with patients and allied services

·       Teaching and mentorship: Training and mentoring junior doctors and ophthalmology trainees

·       Research and professional development: Participating in clinical research and ongoing professional development to advance eye care

About you

You’ll be eligible for vocational registration as an Ophthalmologist with the Medical Council of New Zealand or working towards it. If applying from overseas, you’ll need a recognised specialist qualification (such as FRCO, FRANZCO, or equivalent), and recent experience in a consultant-level role. 

You’ll also bring: 

  • a commitment to equitable and culturally safe care 
  • clinical expertise in either general or subspecialty ophthalmology 
  • excellent communication and collaboration skills 
  • a genuine interest in service development and innovation

Salary and benefits

Senior Medical Officers receive 6 weeks of annual leave and 12 paid public holidays, giving you time to explore our beautiful country and raise a family in our diverse communities. Along with your base salary as a Senior Medical Officer, you will have an annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance of £6.9K GBP ($16K NZD) (pro-rated for part-time employees), reimbursement of your registration and practising certificate fees and your professional indemnity insurance is covered by Health New Zealand.

Senior Medical Officers receive a base salary relative to their level of experience.

·       Medical Officers annual salaries range £61.5K GBP - £91K GBP ($142K NZD - $210K NZD) plus allowance

·       Medical Specialists annual salaries range £80.1K GBP - £115.7K GBP ($185K NZD - $267K NZD) plus allowances

Additional allowances are paid on top of base salary and vary due to location and service.
